Daily Pics #311.

Good morning to you all! It’s another cloudy morning but milder than the last couple and also very windy. The birds are all busy at the feeders enjoying their breakfast. Chickadees were first again and one chickadee landed on the one hanging feeder while I was still holding it. We said good morning to each other, then he took a seed and bounced through the air to his favorite branch to peck open his prize. Each chickadee has a favorite spot or two which they always use to open their seeds. I then hung the feeder in place and put more seeds on the main feeder.

Now the redpolls and evening grosbeaks are here feasting away. Now they have been chased away again by those nasty rock doves (also referred to as pigeons). They only show up when the grosbeaks are here, and due to their large size they scare the smaller grosbeaks. If they do this too often the grosbeaks will stop coming. So I scare the rock doves. Or at least I try to scare them. They don’t scare easily. It started with just one of them coming and now there is 7. Not good. I could build a feeder that would stop the rock doves, but I don’t know if the grosbeaks would like it. The pine grosbeaks definitely wouldn’t like it. Hmm, will have to think about that. Well, it doesn’t look like Theodore is going to return. That’s my wild turkey friend. Too bad. He was fun to have around. And he was getting so friendly too, with me at least. He didn’t like getting close to others. But I’m sure someone else was also feeding him. Perhaps for a different reason though. After all, Christmas is coming up and he just might be in someone’s freezer right now. Not a nice thought. Jasper lost his protector too. Poor Jasper.

Now, continuing with our male and female bird pics, today’s pics show a male and female blue jay, Baxter and Betty, my two main blue jays. Some say that females are a lighter blue than males but that doesn’t always work. Color often depends on light conditions, brighter in sunlight, duller in cloudy weather. Can you tell which is Baxter and which is Betty? I hope you have a wonderful day and God bless!

      • Haha….he is a little bit brighter in colour than Betty.
        A question – are your gulls still coming to your feeder ?
        Usually our gull Scott flies away for the winter, but he is still molting, and has not grown all his new feathers yet, so he is still here every day, and seems extra hungry too. 🤗

      • Actually both Baxter and Betty are the same color when seen together, but the pics show a difference due to light conditions. It’s interesting how light can change colors a bit, sometimes quite a bit.
        No, my gulls left the first week of Sept., which is normal for here. Most adults leave then, especially the herring gulls. Ring billed gulls stay longer, their young will stay quite late at times. There was still some around last week, but all seem to be gone now. Not sure why there is such a difference between the 2 gull species.😀😺

      • Yes, Steve, for sure, light can change colours.
        We have some gulls here that stay throughout the winter. They live over at the duck pond.

  5. Hard to tell the difference between the male and female blue jay …both are majestic ! Get rid of the rock doves ! How ? I don’t know…enjoy the day ! 😻☕️☕️😀🎄

    • Not even a guess? Betty at the top. Those rock doves are too persistent, if they keep up much longer there will be no grosbeaks. The pine grosbeaks seem to have given up already. Have a great day too!😁😺🌞☕☕
