Morning Coffee At Steve’s Country #14.

Good morning everyone! There is lots of nice hot coffee ready for you this morning. Please help yourself and relax for a little while. It is definitely a cold morning here, with that temperature having fallen to -26F (-32C). But it should warm up to -4F (-20C) by this afternoon. We might even get to see a bit of sunshine today. We’ll see if this will help to bring more birds around to the feeders today. But tomorrow it returns to more normal winter temps for December. Jasper and Jenny were here again yesterday but I didn’t see Jenny come up on the deck. She seemed content to look for sunflower seeds on the ground. I notice she still keeps crossing the street, which is not good. Jasper will end up losing his mate.

Are you looking at me? Says this little female red-breasted nuthatch.

Wow, that wood deck is sure booming out there in the cold, makes poor Muffin jump when that happens. Speaking of Muffin, she is in a playful mood this morning. She even lost two of her toys somewhere, including her mouse. That’s not good, I will have to find that mouse, that’s our favorite toy to play with these days. Well, I’m back again, this is going to be late today. It’s actually colder now than it was earlier, I think their high for the day isn’t going to make it that high after all. Oh well. And the feeders are not very active either, kind of surprising, but the little chickadees are still flying back and forth from bush to feeder getting their precious food source of sunflower seeds. They stop periodically to get some quick heat and energy from the suet, then back to the sunflower seeds again.

Hey, all I need to do is twist this wire and this cage will open and I can get it all!

The nuthatches, at least 2 right now, seem to prefer the suet, but also eat a fair number of sunflower seeds during the day. When I put the suet out this morning it was just barely getting daylight and when I got back inside I looked out the window and the female hairy woodpecker was already on the suet pounding away. She must have been waiting up in the tree. But the chickadees were waiting for me too and that was a surprise, but I guess because it was so cold they needed food quickly. They can actually die very quickly if they don’t get food soon enough in the day when it’s cold like this. Depends too just how much food they were able to get the day before. Unlike other birds, they don’t put on any extra fat layer to help them through the cold. Well, here we are entering afternoon. An odd day for sure. I hope you all have a wonderful day and God bless!

Steve and Muffin.

      • Thanks Simon, it was a great day, not so cold but the new snow is making it hard to walk outside, very slippery, so I just had a short walk today. Hopefully I can do better tomorrow.πŸ˜ƒπŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈπŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈ

      • Actually snow can be very slippery to walk in or on!πŸ˜¬πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈ Fresh snow is loose so you can’t get a good grip when walking,πŸ€ͺ feet just slip in the loose snow.πŸ˜³πŸ™„
