For a smile as wide as a country sunrise
Good morning on this second day of the New Year! I hope you are all well and enjoying your weekend. Pull up a chair, grab a coffee and relax with us again today! When I went out to feed the birds this morning there was just a little daylight beginning to show, and the chickadees were already here looking for their breakfast. There always is food out there for them just in case I don’t get out early enough. Mainly this food is for the other birds like the grosbeaks and redpolls. It was mild out there with a temp of 23F (-5C), amazing temp for early January, but that does happen some years.
Plus we had some freezing drizzle overnight and some rain early this morning so the hard packed snow on the deck was nice and soft. Maybe I will be able to remove that snow today, that would be nice. Yesterday and this morning there have been a lot of chickadees, their numbers are increasing which is nice too. And the evening grosbeaks have been here for their first breakfast already and should be about ready to come back for their second breakfast very soon. They are nice and regular now too with numbers around 40 birds. Plus there are that many redpolls each day. So the bird situation is looking better all the time. But trying to get out there to take pics is not easy. So I’m trying something different and go out to wait for them to show up, that way coming out the door won’t be a problem.
And so far…it isn’t working any better. I can wait half an hour and no one shows up, so I come back in and within 10 minutes they are back. I think they must be watching me from some far tree and they let the rest know when I have gone back inside. There are about 25 grosbeaks out there right now and…they just flew away. Finches are a nervous group of birds, doesn’t take much to scare them, but they usually come back fairly quickly. That was so nice, Betty the blue jay was sitting on a branch and Baxter, her mate, opened a peanut and then went and sat beside Betty and fed her again. Kind of breakfast in bed. It is always such a treat to watch them do that. And I never have my camera ready when they do it. After their main time of choosing mates I have seen Baxter feed Betty twice now. That’s a nice way to end our time today, I hope you all have a most wonderful day and God bless!
Steve and Muffin.

I enjoy watching the birds at our feeders but I don’t pay a lot of attention to Who’s Who. We do have a pair of Scrub Jays (they might be something else, I can’t remember) that take turns getting on the feeder. Thanks for the coffee.

Well, if you’re in the southern part of the US then Scrub jays would be a good guess alright. Thanks for stopping by and have a great weekend!

I find it amazing that tiny little birds can withstand freezing temps. They’re lucky they have you to feed them! βοΈβοΈπ₯π₯βοΈπ¦ π€

Yes, it is quite amazing how something the size of a chickadee, and others, can survive even when temps hit -40! But a lot do die in the really cold weather if they don’t find enough food. So feeders do help them out a lot!ππΊπ¦π¦π¦

They can be hard, and it can hurt!π³ We used to have snowball fights as kids, it was lots of fun, until someone got hit in the face,π² then we would stop.π¬ Rules were not to hit in the face, that could hurt bad, giving bleeding nose, black eye or knock out a tooth.π€ͺ Otherwise we were wearing lots of clothes so the snowballs wouldn’t hurt us at all.π It really was fun.ππ
