Coffee At Steve’s Country #18.

Hi everyone on this cool Monday morning! I’m a bit late due to early shopping today, always happens once a week. But the coffee is ready, so just help yourselves and relax with Muffin and I. Muffin is already in relaxing mode, curled up sleeping on my reading bench. It’s still cloudy and much cooler than it has been, the temp right now is 0F (-18C), and it’s windy which makes it feel like -13F (-25C). A cool day for walking down to the river, so I might skip it today. However, it’s supposed to be even colder tomorrow, and all week for that matter. Oh well.

Spring.

Theodore was the first bird here this morning, it was barely getting light when he flew onto the feeder. I had just put out seeds so he must have been watching me. He was taking turns warming his long bare legs and feet in his feathers while balancing on the other foot and eating. What is he going to do if it gets really cold? The chickadees came while he was still here, followed my the redpolls and nuthatches. The blue jays and woodpeckers were in last place arriving for breakfast.

Summer.

But, good news, all 10 of my blue jays are back now, have been for a couple days in a row now. Of course, that does mean more peanuts. Poor Jasper, that other squirrel was back and the chase was on and on and on. And they were really moving fast among those branches out there. They kept that up for about 20 minutes without a break, finally the ‘other’ squirrel gave up and left.

Winter.

Jasper was the victor again, but…just shortly afterward one of those big, mean and nasty ravens showed up and landed in a tree out back. Then he went after Jasper! Normally ravens are scavengers, but if they get hungry enough they will go hunting something small, like squirrels. I have seen them do that before. They disappeared back behind the trees, so I don’t know how it turned out. They were too far away for me to do anything about it. I haven’t seen Jasper since then, but hopefully he is okay. Well, that’s all for today, the pics today show my path as I just get to the river, starting with spring, then summer and then winter. Have a wonderful day and God bless!

  1. I did not know ravens would go after squirrels. Our French squirrels are rather petite and Iโ€™d hate to think they were just a snackette for one of our big black birds.

    • Yes, it can happen, not sure if it would over there, but our harsh winters can mean little food for the ravens, so when they get too hungry squirrels are the main animal they will go after. They have been reported to also kill small birds and even rabbits. That’s why I don’t like having those big birds around my feeder.
