For a smile as wide as a country sunrise
Hi everyone! Here we are with the second photo in our new series. And, as I mentioned, I won’t be saying much, except to let you know this is a male pine grosbeak, a winter visitor from the far north. They are our largest grosbeak and a real beauty to have at the bird feeder. I hope you enjoy this one, the bird of the day will return on Monday, have a wonderful weekend and God bless!

Thanks so much Dusty! They really are beautiful. Kind of a nervous type, hard to get close to them.

Very true, they don’t show up every winter so it’s always a treat.

That’s so true, but these birds go all the way up to the tree line, on the border with tundra. It’s cold up there even in the summer. Their breeding area starts about 200 miles north of us.π

They are indeed, it’s too bad we don’t get to see them more often.

Muffin picked a good bird this time. Would you know if this guy has a range all the way to Ohio? I’ve seen something similar but it wasn’t very big.

Like all grosbeaks they can be very erratic in distribution, some years common, other years none at all. In a bad winter they could get that far south looking for food. They are about the size of a robin if that helps.

Perhaps a redpoll then. I will be showing a pic of a male redpoll either tomorrow or Tuesday.
