For a smile as wide as a country sunrise
Hello everyone! I had to give two pics of this bird, neither is very good, but together they give a better idea of what the bird looks like. This is the ‘black-backed three-toed woodpecker’. A long name for a bird the same size as the hairy woodpecker. The males have a yellow spot on the head, just visible in the top picture. They are birds of the northern forest and generally avoid human contact, so it’s very difficult to get close enough for good pics of them. They are always a treat to see though. Like all woodpeckers, their beak is made of a special elastic like material, they have a spongy type bone behind the beak and a special hyoid (muscles and tendons that support the tongue and throat, and reinforce the head), and a special skull bone which contains spinal fluid. All these help to cushion impact when these birds pound against the trees. All for today’s bird, have a great day and God bless!

i often hear a pecker in my trees, but they are up so high i can not find them. the nuttail’s woodpecker seems to be the most common in my area. but since peckers are small and high in my tree, it is hard to tell who has come to visit. lol

Yes, it does make it hard when they decide to stay high like that, especially when it’s species that are close to the same size. That’s a woodpecker we don’t have up this way.ππΊπ

Thank you very much. It’s a real northern bird and not often seen so it’s a real treat to see one of them. I’m still waiting to get a pic of an even tougher woodpecker, the northern three-toed, I have seen them, but never close enough for a pic.

I am absolutely loving this bird of the day series! I have always struggled with being able to draw birds, but I’ve been doing some in charcoal and they’re just so fun to learn about. Gotta say I favor the bushtit best of all because they’re just so jittery and chatty and fun to watch!

Thank you so very much for your kind words. I have tried to draw and paint birds but without much success. I’m a little better at drawing than painting though. Have a great weekend!

I think I’m only capable of drawing the little round birds. They’re just goofy shaped blobs and I love them for it. https://racheladmas.com/2019/09/23/this-thing-is-a-tiny-acrobat/
You have a great weekend, too!
