Steve’s Bird Of The Day #23.

Hi everyone and welcome back to our bird of the day! Today’s bird is the rose-breasted grosbeak, and this is a pic of a female of that species. Since moving to this spot I have only seen the males one summer, and that was the first summer I lived here and I didn’t have a camera that year. But the females are nice enough to come to the feeders each year in May when they return from the south, then they will show up again in late summer. They are the one grosbeak that only shows up in summer around here, though I have also seen the black-headed grosbeak once. The male is brilliantly colored with black and white and a bright red triangle patch on his chest. The female looks like a rather large female purple finch. These birds are about the same size as the evening grosbeak. They breed across southern Canada, just getting into our area, and down into the U.S. Have a wonderful day and God bless!

    • Yes indeed, that’s the reason. It’s perfect for them cracking open seeds of all kinds, plus pine cones too. Their beaks are very strong. Have a great day Kevin!
