For a smile as wide as a country sunrise
Hi everyone! I think I might start telling about some of my, um, adventures of different kinds, mostly from my early morning outings, but from other times during the day too. Many of these I have never told anyone before, because sometimes people tend to worry. However, since these adventures are from several years ago now it is okay to start sharing them. I think. I didn’t think too much about dangers at that time, though there was some at times for sure. I always went by myself on these adventures as well since it can be hard to find someone else as crazy as me to do these things. Now, some things that happened over the years I had no control over, they just happened, and could happen to anyone. Like today’s story.
I would go out early once summer really arrived, about 4 am, and drive down the highway to one of the smaller lakes and watch the sunrise. Plus I got to see a lot more birds that way as well. The best way to see a lot of different birds is to go to a lot of different places. I really enjoyed this time, and it was a safe thing to do, for the most part. After enjoying the morning, which usually meant visiting several different lakes after the initial lake sunrise place. Then about 7 am I would stop in at a little country restaurant that had a very good breakfast. Actually it was good any time of the day. Plus, they opened at 7 which was just perfect. I parked in front of the restaurant this one day, the sign in the window said “Open”, so in I went and sat down. The place was empty, but that was normal at this time of day.
I waited. No one came out, but the coffee was ready so I helped myself and sat down. And waited. Hmm, doesn’t normally take so long, so I looked through the window of the kitchen door. Couldn’t see anyone so I opened the door and said “hello”. No answer. Okay, this is strange. I go across the hall to the store and office to see if anyone was there. No one around there either. Now I’m starting to get this strange feeling. This highway is the major cross Canada highway, and as such it can sometimes get some people driving along that you really don’t want to meet. It happens quite a bit. Back to the kitchen. I go inside this time and look around. No one in sight.
The house is attached to the restaurant so I go knock on the door. It moves open. Hmm, now I’m getting an even stranger feeling. I really don’t want to find a dead body around somewhere. I go inside the house and call again. Nothing. Okay, that’s enough for me, time to leave. I get outside and I could see a police car driving along the highway so I wave to get their attention. They stop in and I tell them what has happened. They go in and tell me to stay outside. Gladly. And if I hear gunshots I will gladly leave too. They came out after a short time and said they found no one.
They asked for my name and contact info and I went home. I found out later they had just gone to town to shop and forgot to lock the place. They were very thankful to find out it was me that discovered this as they had several thousand dollars in a cash box on the kitchen table, money they were going to take to the bank that day but forgot it too. The next few weeks as I stopped in there they gave me a free breakfast. I told them it wasn’t necessary, but they insisted. We might come back to this restaurant again in another story. I hope you all enjoy your day, Happy April and God bless!

Yes, that’s true, someone else may have been tempted to walk away with all that money. They were very nice people.

I kept thinking you were going to find a body, or the people tied up and gagged. Glad it ended well. I’m forgetful too so I can relate to them leaving the cash.

I was thinking the same thing as I wandered around. Yep, it’s easy to forget things sometimes, even important things. I’m just glad no one was hurt in this. Thanks for reading!ππΊπ
