Thursday’s Thoughts #9. It’s Canada Day!

Good morning everyone! It’s a beautiful, sunny morning with a clear blue sky. The wind has changed direction and the smoke has cleared away. Yesterday the smoke was thick and gave a weird glow to everything as the sun tried to shine through. When we did see the sun it was bright red and that red color came shining through the windows and into my living room. There are 43 forest fires burning in our corner of the province right now, the two largest are 16,000 and 28,000 acres in size. Only one fire is close to our town and it just started last evening so is only an acre in size right now, but not under control. It’s about 8 miles east of town.

Nice pink petunia in the morning sun.

This whole area of the province has been listed as a restricted fire zone, with travel restrictions in some places as well. But there is some hot weather coming this weekend and no real rain in the forecast for the next week, so things could get worse. But right now it’s a beautiful, peaceful, summer morning. And it’s Canada’s birthday today, 154 years old! A great country in which to live, not counting our long and bitterly cold winters which are no fun at all, but we won’t talk about that part. After all, winter only takes up 6 or 7 months of the year, the rest of the time it’s generally sort of nice. Let’s skip the weather. We do have great scenery though. Especially in this area which is the most beautiful part of Canada. Though I might be a little biased. Oh well.

All was calm out here this morning so I put peanuts out for the chipmunks and they were having fun hauling them away. Then along came the squirrels. What a noisy bunch they were too. Freddie, Jasper, Slim, Chase, then came Jasmine and a few fights and some chases later and we were left with Jasmine, and Jasper. Then it remained quiet at least. Although that didn’t help the chipmunks. Jasmine went after Skamper so fast that she forgot to duck when going into the box and Wham! She hit her head, which stopped her momentarily, but she continued the futile chase as Skamper was long gone.

Burgundy petunia also in the morning sun.

Meanwhile Coffee came and filled up with peanuts, Choco got one as well, and Pocket almost got 3 but Jasmine came back right then so he left in a hurry with Jasmine right behind him. Pocket made a hard right turn and Jasmine isn’t too good at sudden turns so, smack! Right into the post. Jasper is now at the peanut pile feasting. This caused Jasmine to jump straight up and she took off after Jasper and jumped right on him. But it was a brief scuffle and Jasper ran off, not to be seen again. It’s no wonder Jasmine eats so much, she must burn a lot of calories with all that chasing. Oh well. Happy Canada Day and God bless!

Steve and Muffin.

    • Thanks Beverly! Those little guys have their fun times! After the squirrels left I put out extra peanuts for the chipmunks and what a stampede of little feet! It was just continuous, all 7 of them. Choco, the smallest, looked so happy as he ran off with his prize of one peanut, which was all he could carry!πŸ˜‚πŸ˜Ή

      • You’re welcome Steve! Wow, that is so cute and entertaining! They are happy at your place…food and someone who cares. Very nice! β€œChoco, you will get bigger soon eating at Steve’s place and then you can carry more peanuts!” πŸ˜‚

      • Yes, poor Choco, he has to make so many trips compared to the others, even Scooter can carry two peanuts now. Yes, he will grow fast I’m sure. I can see a difference in Scooter already.πŸ˜‚πŸ˜Ή

      • Poor Choco, more trips means he is dropping weight with all the exercise, not good. πŸ˜‚. Oh well, he will catch up soon with Scooter and then they both can work up to four peanuts. And then comes another brother or sister…πŸ˜‚

      • Well Steve, we are getting hit with flash floods from the heavy rain for the last few hours and this will continue through Saturday night. Hopefully, this will move your way like our snow storms do to help put out all those forest fires! πŸ”₯β›ˆβ›ˆβ›ˆπŸ˜€

      • It would be nice to get that rain for sure! Unfortunately in summer your weather systems go south of us to hit the southern part of our province. But it would be nice if that changed this time. No real rain in our forecast for at least the next 10 days.😳πŸ”₯πŸ”₯😲

      • Yes, it would be nice for you all. That is too bad it does not head your way. 😳😲πŸ”₯. Be safe. πŸ™

My poor flowers are taking a beating with all this rain, but I am not complaining, at least I do not have to run the sprinkler system for the front and back lawn. πŸ˜‚πŸ‘

      • And I have to water mine every day!πŸ™„πŸ˜‚πŸ˜Ή They dry out completely each day in those containers. The deck is in full sun most of the day. Oh well, hopefully the rain comes soon anyway.😁

      • So sorry πŸ˜‚, that is not good, but your flowers are so pretty. 🌸Your geraniums look better than mine so sun is good. πŸ˜‚ Mine do not get consistent sun. It hits at a certain time during the day and lasts a fair amount of time, but probably needs more time. Also, thanks for the tip you gave Simon on using used coffee grounds as a fertilizer for the flowers. I tried it and noticed a big difference, my flowers perked up! πŸ˜πŸ˜‚. Yes, I hope that rain comes soon to your area. 😁

      • Geraniums do love a full sun location, as long as they get enough moisture. Yep, coffee grounds are the best fertilizer there is, free too. When I actually had a flower garden I got used coffee grounds from one of our local restaurants to perk up the soil and what a difference it made. I got the info from an older German lady who always had such beautiful flowers in unlikely locations, she told me what she did. I have been using them ever since. And in a garden you can’t really overdo it with the coffee grounds. That lady said the top foot of soil was nearly all grounds!πŸ˜‚πŸ˜Ήβ˜•β˜•β˜•β˜•β˜•β˜•

      • Good to know on the geraniums. I will have to move them to a sunnier spot, thanks! That is great, with me drinking coffee every day, there are plenty of grounds. I can make the coffee a foot of topsoil as well for my flowers, thanks! πŸ˜‚β˜•οΈβ˜•οΈβ˜•οΈβ˜•οΈβ˜•οΈβ˜•οΈπŸ˜€πŸ˜‚

      • If you have annuals, dig the grounds in well in the spring before planting, for perennials the same, just might not be able to go so deep.😁🌱🌱🌱🌱

      • I have both…wow, that is great! Thank you, I will do that next spring! 😁. 🌱🌱🌱🌱

      • Hi Steve! More good news! I had lost some of my purple annuals in my hanging pot from all the hailstorms and heavy rain. I have been using the coffee grounds in there faithfully. I noticed today that about a dozen new flowers are about to bloom. It is filling out like when I first bought it! Thanks, I will always use used coffee grounds for fertilizer on my flowers and plants! 😁🌞🌱🌸

  3. Coming to the calories, I’ve been putting lot of fat πŸ™„ not sure where I’m going to end up, the pants are getting tighter. I should wotk on it soon. Coming to the hot weather ahead is really nice, but definitely not good with an active forest fire 😐. Hope the fire will come under control, meanwhile enjoy the beautiful weather and the amazing sunsets 😍 Jasmine must have missed a turn, don’t judge her yet πŸ˜‰ Jasper and chase and everyone knows better than you πŸ˜…πŸ˜ maybe you should try checking with muffin, what do you think muffin πŸ€“πŸ˜Ί… So it’s the 154th anniversary πŸŽ‰πŸ˜πŸ˜yay!!! Have a wonderful day Uncle Steve 😺✨πŸ₯‚ Celebrate the Canada day πŸ’

    • Thanks so much Sharon! Rabbits are one critter we don’t have to worry about. Hopefully they’ll find tastier flowers elsewhere. No rain in the forecast until next Wednesday for us, but we sure need it. Have a good night!πŸ˜€πŸ˜ΊπŸŒžπŸŒ™πŸ˜΄
