Thursday’s Thoughts. #24

Good morning everyone! I hope that you are all feeling well and having a great start to your day! It’s cold and wet here again this morning. We receive another inch (2.5cm) of rain overnight, seems we are getting that much rain nearly every night lately. We did need some rain, though we are now a bit soggy from all this rain. But it works that way quite often. However, it also dries out fast too since we don’t have much soil in most places. That cold wind is still howling out there too. And it’s from the south, which usually brings warmer weather to us.

Betty the blue jay on a sunny day.

Not this time though. It’s going to be even colder tomorrow. But Sunday and Monday are supposed to be nice, then back to cold. The birds were a bit late showing up this morning, it didn’t get light very early with these heavy clouds. The juncos were first as usual, they normally show up while it is just barely getting light. Chickadees are second, then it’s either the nuthatches or blue jays that will be third showing up. The evening grosbeaks are here too, a bit earlier than usual. It’s always nice to hear their cheerful chirping out there.

The white-throated sparrows have gone now and soon the juncos will also leave us. There was still one grackle here yesterday for a while, but I haven’t seen it this morning yet. But he won’t be staying around much longer either. And of course the chipmunks are gone and won’t be coming out of their little homes until spring, about 6 months from now. Seems like such a long time. Probably because it is a long time. I’m kind of surprised that Jasper hasn’t decided to come back and make this his home again. He does visit the odd time, but never stays long. So strange really.

Ricky, the ring-billed gull, from 2 days ago.

But I guess he likes his new home and doesn’t want to move again. That’s understandable. Moving isn’t really a lot of fun. I used to enjoy it at one time. It was exciting moving to a new location, being in a new apartment. It’s not so exciting anymore. All that packing. And unpacking. I have a lot of stuff. Though I have gotten rid of 75% of the stuff I had 11 years ago. I tend to move a fair bit. But only 4 times in the last 11 years. That’s not so bad. At one time I moved, on average, every 14 months. So I can understand why Jasper wouldn’t want to move again. Oh well. Time to put out more food for the birds. Have a wonderful day everyone and God bless!

  2. chipmunks gone 😮 that’s sad, taking a break is good, 6 months break 😅 quiet long though, nature does it’s job, not sure about any other animal that takes too like a 6 month break, can you share with us 🤔 The ring belled gull looks big and white, like a wide spread snow 😍 big wings ❣️ happy food parking for the birds, Enjoy the rest of the day 😇🥳🥂

    • Bears are the same, sleep all winter,🐻 from 5 to 7 months. Skunks also do the same.🦨 Raccoons mostly,🦝 though they sometimes come out in winter if it warms up enough.🤔 Beavers also and muskrats, ground squirrels. Lots of animals do it. Ricky isn’t really very big, just looks big with his wings spread out.😲 It has been a good day, but wet and cold. Have a great day Simon!😁😺🌙☔☔🍁🍂

      • That means we need to look at the past more seriously, nature forced all these species, and obviously it’s the climate, before adapting into this, how they were before 🤔 were they always same? or is it only when the climate is like that. Ricky looks big though 😅 ha ha . maybe his wings.. It’s been wet and cold 😀 that’s nice after all, hope it gets sunny too ☺️

      • Some animals need to hibernate or they would die, because there is no food for them in winter. They obviously knew to do this right from the start or they would have become extinct the first winter.😳 Yes, holding his wings out like that makes Ricky look bigger, but he’s quite small compared to my herring gulls that are here in summer.😁 Sunshine coming tomorrow.🌞 Maybe.😂😂

    • Thanks so much! No, she hasn’t complained at all which surprised me. We have started our winter play time instead and she’s happy with that. Gets her nice and tired.😁😸☔☔🍁🍂
