Tuesday’s Tails. #28

A very good morning to everyone on this bright and beautiful Tuesday! I do hope this finds you all healthy and happy this morning and looking forward to your day. It is a lovely, sunny morning, but the weather has changed the last couple of days. It’s cooling off now, with a temp of 36F (2C) this morning and a fairly strong wind which is making it feel even cooler. The last 2 nights have been rather interesting. I mentioned yesterday about the bear coming around again on Saturday night. I wanted to leave Sunday night for today since it fits with Tuesday’s Tails nicely.

Sunday night around 9:30 there was a noise on the deck so Muffin woke up and went to look, but she backed away hiding behind the drapes. So I looked. That big 500lb bear was standing on the railing of the deck and reaching over with his paw to get at the seed shells on the feeder! That’s all that was left on the feeder, just shells. But he still couldn’t reach all the way, so he started to climb up onto that arm of the feeder pole to go out onto the feeder! I did build it strong, but it’s not going to hold that big bear. So I started banging on the window.

Female evening grosbeak on the feeder the bear tried to carry away.

He looked back at me but kept on going. I banged some more and waved my arms at him. He looked, then decided to come down and walked slowly off the deck. He’s a rather large bear, so I guess he figures it’s not necessary to walk fast. Oh well, he left, that’s the main thing. Later I noticed Muffin hiding again, so figured the bear was back. I looked outside and sure enough, there was a bear, but not the same one, this was the one that has that huge head that I have mentioned before. This one is also big, but not as big as the other one. Great.

This one lay down on the deck licking up the seed shells. Kind of lazy type bear. While Muffin and I are watching this, another bear comes up on the deck, the same size as the one that’s already there. Great, there’s going to be a bear fight on my deck. But that didn’t happen, they got along very well licking up the seed shells, knocked over my one feeder that just sits on boxes on the deck. One decided to pick it up and walk away with it. That was too much so I opened the door and yelled at those two. He dropped the feeder and they both left, more quickly than the first one.

No more problems that night. Last night Muffin and I are sleeping peacefully and we are awakened with loud roaring and growling outside, quite scary sounding really. We went to look, though Muffin just peaked around the drapes. Two bears were fighting outside, not on the deck, but on the ground by the deck. It was hard to tell which 2 bears it was, but one gave up and ran off. The other one stayed around for a bit looking for food on the ground. There was nothing on the deck, I had cleaned it up very well when I brought the feeders in for the night.

Red-breasted nuthatch. This is the one that landed on my head.

Perhaps the bears sense the storm coming, so they are desperately trying to get as much food as possible before heading to their dens for hibernation. It’s too bad they were fighting on the ground, no way to get pictures down there, just too dark, my deck is 6 feet above the ground and blocks the light from getting down there. The fight didn’t last long anyway, but it was cool to see, from the safety of indoors. At least I think it’s safe in here. Though they could easily get in if they wanted to do so.

Oh well, hopefully they will soon be hibernating. Right now it’s a beautiful day, but not much bird activity. Have a beautiful day everyone and God bless!

Steve and Muffin.
