Wednesday’s Wanderings. #30

Good morning everyone! It’s a cloudy and very windy morning here once again. The temperature started at a pleasant 27F (-3C), but since the wind has now switched to the north the temp is dropping a bit and is now 23F (-5C). It is supposed to keep dropping throughout the day until it reaches -4F (-20C) tonight, a bit cool but still not bad for this time of the year. The birds are sure busy this morning, lots of evening grosbeaks, chickadees and nuthatches. But there is not as many blue jays today for some reason, maybe a dozen of them.

This is my friend Major, a white-tailed deer buck.

There is now 2 hairy woodpeckers, male and female, coming to the suet feeder each day, plus a male downy woodpecker. The downy is quite friendly. Yesterday afternoon I added another “arm” sticking out from the bird feeder pole, to hold another hanging feeder. Plus another hanger to hold a second suet feeder which I put out this morning. Now when the woodpeckers are at one suet feeder, the smaller birds have another one to use. Of course it is always possible for 2 woodpeckers to be here at the same time, but that wouldn’t happen very often. They seldom come together, they tend to have “arguments” if they do. All that happens is a lot of squawking and chasing.

Back to the downy woodpecker, yesterday afternoon, after finishing my work, it was nearly time to bring in the feeders so I waited outside watching the birds. As I leaned on the railing next to the suet feeder along came the downy woodpecker, sat on the railing next to me, looked at me, so I talked to him. He then went up to the suet and enjoyed his bedtime snack. While he was doing that I put some sunflower seeds on my hand, hoping Chester would come.

Here is a red-breasted nuthatch on my hand, a fall picture.

Instead a little red-breasted nuthatch landed on my hand, looked at me, then chose a nice big sunflower seed and off she flew. It was a female and such a joy having her on my hand. Even though it is not the first time having a nuthatch on my hand, it still brings a lot of joy whenever it happens. Sometimes we can get a large bundle of joy from a very small package. I needed that yesterday, and it was perfect. Once again a couple of my favorite photos to share with you. Thank you for reading today, have a wonderful Wednesday and God bless!
