“Do you think he will open this early Kat?,” asked Rock. “He will, he kind of knows me from way back,” she said, “I’m sure he will let us in, but let me go check.” They are parked in front of his little shop and Kat goes to the door and presses a button. The old man comes to the door, looks at Kat a bit puzzled. “Oh, Katharina, come in,” he said. She goes inside. “My name is Kat now, I’m finally a good girl like you wanted for me,” Kat said smiling, but tired. “That is nice to hear for his old man,” he said, “but there is trouble, what is it?”

“My husband and sister,” she said slowly, “my husband was given this.” The man looked, “how long ago?” “I don’t know for sure, maybe an hour,” Kat answered. “You be quick, bring him in here, sister too,” he said and went to work. Kat asked Rock to bring us in and he put me and Jennifer on a bed. “Her poison too?”, asked the old man. “No, she was beaten with a metal pipe,” said Kat, “but can you check her please.” “Yes, I do so, but first husband,” he said quietly while he spent time mixing some medicine.

Kat told Rock to stay while she made a phone call. She went out to the car, but first sent two cars around to the back of the building. Then she called Baldwin to fill him in. “This case has a high cost to it Baldwin,” she started and then explained. “This is a big operation, people have sold out to our enemies,” said Kat, “Alex was just the muscle for the group, and he has a lot of muscle, we may never know how much, but at least 200 to 300 men, though a few less of his more important men now. It involves people in the police and government, right up to Senator John Swansea of New York.”

“Do you have proof of Senator Swansea’s involvement?” asked Baldwin. “Yes, a lot of proof, including recorded phone calls, videos of Alex and Senator Swansea talking about this project of yours,” explained Kat, “they know a lot about that defense project, changes will have to be made. We know all about it, we needed to hack into your research facility to find your friend, who isn’t your friend, it is a different man entirely. They had changed your friend’s profile and whole life to be this man instead.

But they made a mistake in saying he only ever had 2 children, which he had alright, since Sonia died just one hour after birth. So she could not have been kidnapped. We found out it was Harold’s wife’s sister that did that. She became very concerned when her sister and family disappeared suddenly about 14 months ago and she was not satisfied with the police investigation. So she did the fake kidnapping hoping that would get some investigation going.”

“That would be about the time Harold would have joined the research team,” said Baldwin, “we have a big flaw in our system that needs to be fixed.” “And your whole security team needs replacing, they are in this too,” said Kat. “I kind of thought so,” said Baldwin, “and I have a new team ready to move in.” “You will need to shut things down right away, but give some other excuse,” said Kat, “you will need to move in on each of these people at the same time or they will disappear.” “Yes,” said Baldwin, “I have been talking with the President and the FBI, we were just waiting for your report. Bring that info to me now.”

“I can’t leave Steve right now, he’s dying,” said Kat sobbing. “You have to Kat, you know that Steve would want you to do that,” said Baldwin softly, a rarity for him, “I will meet you half way, where are you at?” She told him, then went inside to check on me and Jennifer. “You go, very important, I can tell,” said the old man, “you leave guard here too. I say there is chance.” Kat smiled and left to meet with Baldwin. They met and sat talking for a while. “I will get things set at the hospital for the others, and get Jennifer in as well, and Steve if he needs it,” said Baldwin.

“With this Chinese man, he will have Steve walking out of there, or Steve will be dead because it was too late,” said Kat. “Steve will pull through, he always has,” Baldwin assured her, “then you will all be going on a vacation where no one will find you!” “We sure need that,” said Kat. She looked exhausted, Baldwin was worried. Back she went, it took 45 minutes to return, a special military ambulance was there to pick up Jennifer just like Baldwin had told her. Aside from some terrible bruising, Jennifer was okay.

Annelie and Sam really did not have much wrong with them, more bruises, cuts and some minor burns. Kat goes inside, I’m sitting in a chair, she turns and hugs the old man, then rushes over to me. “You be careful now, no much excitement right now for husband,” said the old man, “here, take this, special herb tea, very hard to get, one spoon for each cup tea, drink one cup 3 times each day till all gone, very important.” “I will make sure he drinks it,” said Kat smiling at me. I manage to smile back. “It maybe a little bitter, maybe use a little honey, not much,” he added.

Two hours later I walked out of there with Kat and Rock and by late that day we were flying home. We wanted to be in on that final round up, but we understood why it was best for others to handle it. And they managed to catch everyone except for a few less important people. Or are they? Baldwin’s friend, Harold Stanton, his wife and 2 children were found buried in their garden behind the house. Annelie and Jennifer came on another plane the next day, even though Jennifer was still so very sore, but she wanted to get back home. We had only been home a short time and the cats come into the library each pulling a small wagon with vacation brochures. “Oh no, here we go again!”, said Kat! Everyone, including the cats began laughing.
