The Investigators, Inc. Sleepy Town Mystery. Chapter 1, Deception of Beauty.

Well, it took us quite some time, but we finally settled on a vacation spot. Our previous choices only landed us in trouble, so this time we took M.C.’s choice. It is a small castle in a more remote area, with a lake on one side and a small town surrounding the castle. We decided for safety that we would go in two groups to our destination, just in case anyone was watching. So Annelie, Jennifer and M.C. went together and Kat, Muffin and myself went together.

Rock doesn’t like vacations, apparently, so he volunteered to stay behind and look after the chateau for us, plus help Baldwin a little over at the resort that Baldwin now operates by himself, though he does have a young couple working there too. Both of our groups took commercial jets to the nearest city, then Kat, Muffin and I flew in a smaller plane to our destination town. Annelie preferred to rent a car and drive the rest of the way. That also gives us the ability to drive around the countryside here which should be nice. We all agreed that the place was more beautiful than the pictures.

Part of the castle had been turned into a bed and breakfast and was very nicely decorated. Both of our rooms were large and furnished with beautiful antiques. I think we will finally get a nice peaceful vacation out here. Even Muffin, who is always so worried about ghosts in old castles, really likes it here and is eager to look around tomorrow. But now it’s getting late, so time for bed, and I am sure we will all sleep well.

Meanwhile unknown to us, in some far away location, a conversation is taking place. “I want to know everything you can find out about that man,” said a very important looking man, “he must have some important connections to spoil our plans like he did. 1 million US dollars is yours for this information. Plus, kill this man for another 10 million US dollars. Add 1 million US dollars for each of his main associates who helped him against us. And another 1 million US dollars for those mangy cats he used!”

“It’s done,” said another man, “do you also want information about his main helpers?” “No!,” said the first man, “I am not interested in them, just kill them all, and I want proof they are dead! I only want information on the main man who led this operation against us. He must have had connections, I want to know who they are.” “Okay,” said the second man, “it’s done.”

Now back to us again. We all slept right through the night, including the cats, I had told them they didn’t need to watch during the night, since no one know we are here, not even Baldwin or Rock. We went down for breakfast, and since we were the only ones staying there right now, the owner asked us what we would like for breakfast. That was easy, pancakes! So she went off and made a huge stack of pancakes for us, with eggs, bacon and sausages. We managed to eat most of it too.

Then off we went to walk around the small town. It is definitely one of those sleepy little towns where not much happens from year to year. Many of the buildings in town looked to be as old as the castle. Around noon we stopped at a little cafe, the only one in town, for some tea. While we were there a woman came walking past and tossed a crumpled up paper at me, hitting my cup just as I was about to drink, causing me to spill my tea.

Everyone laughed! Kat grabbed the piece of paper and straightened it out. On it was written “the beauty of this town is deceptive, death is here, mysterious death. Save yourselves and leave.” Kat handed the note to me and I passed it to the others. “Kind of a strange thing,” said Annelie. “I agree,” said Jennifer, “why single us out?” “Possibly just a joke,” I said, “so let’s not mention it to anyone.” “Still, I think we need to be a bit more careful now,” said Kat.

“Okay,” I said, “I will agree with that, but do not let this interfere with our vacation.” We all agreed with that and soon continued walking around, taking lots of pictures like good tourists always do. Finally we get back to the castle about mid afternoon, just as some more people arrived to stay there for a few days. It was a younger couple with 3 small children. They were very friendly and the kids loved the cats.

To Be Continued.

  2. The beginning of real trouble is on the horizon ! That is a lot of money offered for your deaths, so BE VERY ALERT ! Mind you, you do not know how much money was laid out…hmmm…are you aware of any red lights ? Ask your cats ! πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈπŸ‘©πŸ˜ΌπŸ˜ΌπŸ€”

    • Yes, it is a lot of money, but who is offering that money and who is he giving it to? I don’t think it has anything to do with this little town since the conversation was held in a far away place. And it concerned something we did in the past. Now the note is something different again, what is that all about? Hmm…πŸ€”πŸ‘±β€β™€οΈπŸ™€πŸ™€πŸ‘±β€β™€οΈπŸ‘©πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ
