Cold Weather, Hot Coffee.

Good morning to you all! It is a cold morning with a temp rounding out at -28F (-33C). It is cold. Plus we had more snow overnight so I had to go out early and clean off all the bird feeders so that everything would be ready for the birds when they arrived. Poor little birds. Their legs and feet were completely hidden by feathers this morning, so it looked like they were bouncing around on their tummies. It seems to be hardest on the nuthatches. They have to show their feet and legs while getting at the suet, which is mainly what they want in this cold weather.

Female pine grosbeak with another one and a redpoll in the background.

But they have to stop and sit on the railing covering those feet and legs to warm them up before going after the suet again. And the suet is hard on these cold days, so they really have to pound away at it to get anything. But all the birds are affected, they all need to puff out those feathers to keep legs and feet warm. And it will be a bit colder the next couple of nights, and days. The joys of winter. It does look nice outside with all that new snow, about 10 inches of it.

But it only looks nice from inside. It is too cold to enjoy anything outside. Some people say they enjoy this kind of cold, but honestly, there is nothing a person can do outside that is really enjoyable when it is cold. Unless a person enjoys freezing. By the time I have enough clothes on to go outside, I can barely move. Even with the warmest clothes, it is still cold. However, this still is not that cold, it can get much colder yet.

Male pine grosbeak.

Last winter we hit well below -40. Who knows, we might get there this winter also. But it is great weather to stay inside and drink some nice hot coffee! All day long. Well, sometimes I switch to nice hot chocolate. For me, any day is a good day for coffee, but these cold days just call out of coffee! So I listen and keep that coffee pot going. Well, I think it must be time for another cup of coffee, would anyone else like a cup? Have a wonderful, warm, Wednesday and God bless!

    • It’s actually better to leave them in their cold environment, otherwise drastic changes in temperature can be hard for them to adjust. The best thing is just providing good nourishing food that will help produce the body heat they need to survive.
Thanks for stopping by Nova! Have a great day!πŸ˜€πŸ˜»

  3. Most of us who “enjoy” cold weather, first of all, do not get down to -40 where F and C cross paths!
Secondly, we don’t really enjoy the cold, but our protection from it, knowing that it is 32⁰F (0⁰C) and we can walk and sled ride and drink some hot coffee outside before it freezes!! I love the snow… looking at it, and even making snow angels if it is above 25⁰F (-4⁰C), but keep it off my skin and let me enjoy a warm blanket in a horse-drawn sled!
Another Canadian friend of mine from Red Deer would say, There’s no such thing as too cold; only inadequate clothing. πŸ˜‰ At -40, maybe a spaceman’s outfit?

    • I still say there is a too cold temp.😁 But that’s me. I have gone out in very cold temps, walking, snowshoeing in temps of -40 to -50F,😬 though not because I enjoyed it, but because I wanted to do it, just to see what it was like.πŸ™„ Then I came to my senses!πŸ˜‚ The coldest we have ever had here was -80FπŸ₯Ά and a friend and I actually walked a mile down a forest road to deliver some medicine to his folks. Then we could warm up before coming back. I have clothes good for -40 to -50F, but if a person is going to be outside longer than running to their car, it doesn’t help.πŸ₯Ά Your friend in Red Deer is enjoying some nice cold weather these days!😳 Have a great day CA!😁

      • The coldest I ever experienced was a week of -50F in North Kenai, AK! Alaska does not close schools for snow; at least they did not in the 1970s. But after three days of -50, they had to cancel school because they said it was too hard on the axles in the buses; apparently the axle grease would gum up!!
I went for a short walk one of the days, and headed back quickly when my lungs started hurting. My Alaskan friend with me advised me to breath into my gloved hands, thus saving some warmth for my lungs.
In Lex, KY, today we are suffering with 65F (18C)!!! I wanted snow. 😒

      • Yes, that cold air is hard on the lungs. I have done that, breathing into my gloves, it does help a lot when it is seriously cold. Although these days I would rather stay indoors when it gets so cold!
Oh my, I wish I was suffering with such temps! Enjoy yourself!πŸ˜€πŸŒž

  5. Hi, I’ll have a hot Mexican chocolate 😌.
Winter is beautiful to look at, but I don’t particularly like the brisk cold, especially when it’s windy.
I do love how the snow covers the land like a blanket and the icicles hanging from the trees.
I have to be careful in the cold, my hand freezes up badly to the point I’m crying because it hurts.
We’ve not received snowflakes yet, so well see what happens. We’ve had a lot of rain though.
Oops, Muffin sorry I didn’t mean to bump into you. I hope a hot chocolate drop didn’t get on you. 😟

Nice to see everyone again. Have a cozy day!

    • Hi Tiffany, so happy you could join us today! I hope your hot chocolate was just right. Yes, the trees here, especially the spruce and balsam, look so nice with their branches covered with that fresh layer of snow and the sun shining so bright.πŸŒ²β„πŸŒž But I prefer to look at it from inside! I wish I could have gone out walking to get some pics today, but…
Muffin does like walking close to people and she likes you. I’m sure she’s okay.😻

  7. My daughter has been really obsessed with stovetop hot chocolate lately. I cheat and use hot chocolate mix, but I heat it in a pot over the stove. We’re out of hot chocolate now and I told her that I’m not going to the store because it’s too cold outside. I only go out if I absolutely have to or if Nick drives, or if I’m working.

    • Not even if she uses her big sad eyes that say “please mommy, I really need that hot chocolate”?πŸ˜‚ It is great in cold weather, I like to have it in the afternoon or right after supper. So good.πŸ˜‹β˜•β˜•

      • She always gets her way. My husband gives in very easily so she knows to go to him if mommy says no. I wouldn’t be surprised if he comes home with a can of hot chocolate tomorrow. We add those jumbo marshmallows to hot chocolate and I recommend it – feels fancier that way!

      • hehe! That’s the way to do it! Kids learn fast about things like that. I wish I had some marshmallows, any size, but the store was sold out the last time I was there. Though I didn’t try Safeway, one look at the parking lot told me I didn’t want to go there. I do not like crowds at the store.

      • I avoid Safeway as much as possible because it’s $$$. I was there a couple weeks ago because I wanted Hershey’s kisses. $9 for 2 smallish bags. 😏 Usually, I don’t care for Hershey’s chocolate but their white chocolate peppermint kisses are good. Their sugar cookie kisses are pretty good too.

      • I always liked Hershey’s kisses, so good, sadly I can’t have them anymore. I need to shop at Safeway due to my wacky diet restrictions. It’s the only store that has what I need. Hard to imagine, but I pay over $10 for a loaf of bread!

        Liked by 1 person

      • Oh, I can imagine! Specialty foods are SO expensive. My mom used to shop at health food stores and gave up because of the prices. It might be easier to make your own bread. Costco is the way to go for gluten free flour.

        Liked by 1 person

      • Yep, I thought about making my own bread, but all I produced was bricks. Gluten free flour is so different from regular flour, it takes some tries to get it right. Next time I will do just one loaf and see how it works. Even the birds wouldn’t eat the last 2!πŸ˜‚πŸ˜Ή No Costco here and I never go to Wpg anymore.

I’m sorry that you were not able to get out of there before winter, but I hope you are able to have a wonderful time in the beautiful solitude anyway. I would love to be on a tropical island somewhere enjoying the warm sunshine, bare feet in the sand. Just a dream for me though.
