Thoughts For Thursday. #3

Good morning to everyone on this very wintry Thursday! It seems to always happen, it snows, then it turns bitterly cold afterward. This time is no exception to that. Going out to feed the birds this morning felt incredibly cold. Probably because it was. The temperature this morning hovered around -44F (-42C). I am just glad there was no wind out there. But even wearing my gloves this morning, my fingers still got cold. The poor little birds are hopping around with their feet and legs completely covered once again.

Walking along the trail to the river, lots of snow around.

The suet cakes are more than half eaten now so it is time to fill up the cages again. Those suet cakes are important to the birds in this cold weather. They freeze quite solidly in this cold, so I can hear the birds pecking on them. Sounds like they are hitting a board. Strangely, there is not as many grosbeaks around this morning. And it is mostly evening grosbeaks that are here today, the pine grosbeaks are missing except for a handful. But there is a lot of smaller birds. Plus Baxter and Betty were here this morning as well, that was nice to see. Actually, I see they are back again right now.

And today is trash pickup day, so I had to get my trash and blue box out to the street nice and early. That was cold. It meant staying outside longer than I wanted to be out there. Oh well. Part of the joys of winter. Which is why I enjoy summer so much. I think my walks to the river will be on hold for a while. It is going to be milder tomorrow, but more snow will come with that milder weather. Then it is back to the cold again. I will get back there eventually, might take a while, but I will get there. I hope. It is a beautiful walk in the winter, but not if I’m going to freeze along the way, or fall into some deep snow. The snow depth varies a lot.

Off the main trail and following the foot path to the river.

It is not deep right at the river, the wind blows it away from there, so it is only about 12 to 14 inches (30 to 35cm) deep. Last winter at the river the snow was only 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10cm) deep. This winter we have had more snow. Back in the trees the snow gets deeper, and the more open areas the snow is deeper still. I am sure in some of those areas the snow is at least 3 feet deep or more (90cm), possibly deeper. But I stay away from those places. If I ever fell in snow that deep I would never get up again. Those measurements were before our latest snowfall. So for now, I stay home, until that path is cleared better. Thank you all for reading, have a wonderful day and God bless!

  1. Good Morning Steve! Might be wisdom to get some disposable hand warmers to put in your gloves, when you feed the birds. At those extreme cold temperatures, the warmers are worth it.. frostbite is no fun. Take care and have a great day!

    • Good morning! Yes, that is a thought, can’t buy them here but maybe I should check Amazon. At the start it looked like it would be a mild winter, but it sure changed after Christmas.

  2. You playing without gloves again? or with gloves only you played ? why is it this careful word is extinct 😂. Be careful and stay as warm as you could, be careful with walking, it’s not a joke to fall and get up and you might need help to stay not buried under snow. Stay warm and enjoy the joys of winter, you can still walk inside your house all day 😁 I know that’s kind of boring, but you should walk.😉 Have a good day ✨

    • Oh I was wearing gloves for sure this morning, too cold for bare hands today.🥶 But even with gloves it was too cold. No more outdoor walking until it warms up a bit, and that might be a while yet.😳😬
Not much space for walking around in this little place!😂😹 So I do other exercises instead.
Enjoy your night Simon, try to sleep!🌙😴

      • Hi Wael! Over here February and March can give us a lot of cold weather. It takes a long time for the warmer weather to hit us, usually April. But sometimes by mid March. March is also our snowiest month of the year normally.
