Fabulous Friday. #4

Good morning everyone and Happy Friday as well! It’s a little chilly this morning, but not too bad really. It was down to -12F (-24C) overnight, but it has already warmed up to -6F (-21C). It is mostly cloudy, but there is some blue sky showing as well. The birds are very busy though there are less grosbeaks here this morning than usual, but the number of common redpolls seems to be increasing. I saw a little junco again yesterday, so it is still managing to survive through all our cold weather.

I had not seen it for a few days so I thought perhaps it has died. Hopefully he continues to find enough food around here. Speaking of finding food. There are two deer that now come up on the deck looking for food. I chase them away during the day, so now they come at night. I hear that horrible scrunch scrunch across the deck as the deer walk across that frozen snow. It is very loud and wakes me up. And as soon as one leaves, the other one comes.

Heading downhill along the path to the river.

So in total they are out there about 20 minutes or more and it keeps me awake. By the time they leave, I am thoroughly awake and can’t get back to sleep. I might have to look at making a gate so they cannot get on the deck. For that I would need my landlord’s permission. And warmer weather to make the gate. And this morning I discovered the larger of the two deer can reach one of my hanging feeders and cleaned it out last night. That’s why he was out there longer than usual.

The simple solution is to remove the food temptation and they stop coming. Well, it is not that simple. Deer, like bears, once they find food will keep coming back, even if they don’t find anymore food. They do not give up easily. However, I am going to do that anyway since making a gate is out of the question at the moment. I discovered that my new neighbors cat is really an outdoor cat, and he is anxious to get out. That will be a big problem for my birds, and a bigger problem for my chipmunks.

The main path heads this way, but I cut off here and take a foot path to the river.

Apparently his cat loves catching chipmunks. Cats are good at that. His dog also likes doing that. So feeding the chipmunks might have to stop to keep them safe. Sigh. I will have to stop feeding the birds earlier too. Oh well, I have to stop because of the bears anyway. I will just have to go out walking more so I can watch the birds. Not much wind right now, hopefully it stays that way so I can head down to the river again later. Thank you for stopping by today. It’s another fabulous Friday! Have a great day and God bless!

Steve and Muffin.

    • It’s actually against the law to allow cats to roam free in our town, but few people obey that one. Unfortunately there is no apartments for rent in our town, hasn’t been any now in 3 years, except for senior’s apartments and those have a four year waiting list. I really would like to move and I keep looking.πŸ˜€πŸ˜Ί

    • I think the deer are worse, they make more noise than the bears!🐻🦌 Muffin already wakes me up every night.😹🦘 Sigh. I don’t think I will have any chipmunks left with that cat prowling around.😟 Unless he’s only out at night. I had a great walk to the river today! Have a nice weekend Simon!😁🌞

  2. Hi Steve. I finally completed the sunshine blogger award that you nominated me for on Oct 14, 2019 (I’m not kidding). I’m not sure if you got a notification. This is procrastination at its finest, but I’m ready for some sunshine. 🌞

I should be working right now but I’m symptomatic and have to isolate. This is Day 5 of feeling sick and fatigued. I got swabbed today so now I’m waiting for the results while feeling sorry for myself. I hope you are staying safe and healthy! 😷

    • Yes, I got the notification this morning, but it’s been a busy day so haven’t had time until now to look at it. Thanks for doing it, I had really forgotten all about that one.
Oh, that’s too bad, sorry to hear that. Hope you get over it quickly and it doesn’t leave lasting effects like it did with me.
Yes, I don’t go out much now, there are so many cases in our little town now. I don’t want to get this thing a second time.
Hope you can have a good weekend Hilary!πŸ˜€πŸ˜ΊπŸŒžβ˜•β˜•

      • I think the swab will come back negative but this is Day 5 of being symptomatic. I hate being sick and my immune system is shot. I can’t care for sick patients when I am also sick…

I’m missing 3 days of work (I work weekends) but it’s better that I stay home than infect others. I’m grateful to be vaccinated incl. the booster shot. I couldn’t imagine how much worse this thing could be without this extra layer of protection! πŸ’ͺ

I’m out of coffee. The only coffee we have is instant decaf β˜•οΈ I’m too sick to go grocery shopping.

      • Hopefully it doesn’t last much longer. Mine was 18 days, not counting the long Covid session. I have had all 3 shots too, no point taking chances. Plus I always wear masks.
Oh my, out of coffee, instant is better than nothing though. I’m always well stocked with coffee, it’s one of the essential food groups after all.πŸ˜πŸ˜‚β˜•β˜•

      • 18 days?!? πŸ˜– I wouldn’t be able to handle 18 days. I wore a N95 mask and PPE at work (which included a mask over my N95 mask). I took precautions but had to care for covid patients last weekend, so I guess anything goes at this point. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ At the time we didn’t know that they were covid+

Yeah, I rather not go to the store unless I absolutely have to. I try to avoid dragging an infant and a 5-year to the store with me. Indeed, mornings are not complete without coffee! β˜•οΈ

      • Wow, I didn’t think an N95 would need anything else to cover it!😳 But this new, or not so new, Omicron seems to get at people no matter what.
I guess it would be quite an adventure shopping with young kids!πŸ€”πŸ˜‚πŸ›’
Yep, at least 2 cups of coffee, now that I agreed with my doctor to cut back from 4 to 2. So I shopped around and found bigger cups to use. Now I’m at just 2 cups.πŸ˜β˜•β˜•

      • We double mask at work if a patient is on isolation precautions. Gown, gloves, eye shield/goggles, N95 mask/mask 😷 Most of them are on isolation right now and this includes covid + patients πŸ˜• I don’t trust the N95 on its own if a patient coughs on me, and then still having to care for their roommate who is also on isolation. We have to don and doff between patients – not just between rooms, so we use a lot of N95 masks. I calculated that we wouldn’t have enough N95 masks if everyone did this. That’s why I double mask. The mask I wear over top of the N95 also has an eye shield. I always don and doff the top mask 😷 It’s a bit much I know, but I deal with covid + patients now which I never thought I would have to do. The covid + units are all full and these patients have nowhere else to go. Omicron is overwhelming the hospitals right now.

      • P.S. My covid test came back negative but I’m still symptomatic so I am staying home. I feel like rubbish today and I’m too sick to leave the house. This is day 6 and my symptoms have gotten worse rather than better.

      • That’s too bad, sorry you have gotten worse. That’s what it did for me too. I can understand why you wouldn’t want to go to work feeling like that.

      • Staff will get mad if we go to work sniffling and coughing. I’ve had to cancel work before due to insomnia too, on more than one occasion.

Some staff were questionably sick last weekend and I was cringing under my mask. At one point I said to a girl who was sniffling and congested, β€œAre you okay?” Nurses feel obligated to work but they really shouldn’t if they aren’t feeling well. I feel like a bus ran me over and have been feeling really run-down. It’s not fair to the staff or the patients. I hate letting down the staff because it means more work for them to cover my absence. Luckily we don’t need doctor’s notes or stuff like that – just a covid swab result. I’ve been swabbed 4 times now plus 2 at-home tests.

      • I can certainly understand not working if you’re not sleeping right. I stumble around all day when I don’t sleep properly and I’m not doing much. I wouldn’t want to work like you in a hospital without sleeping!
I don’t think I would want to be a swabber, what if someone coughed or sneezed while getting it done? If it was me I would be running off to get disinfected! I would probably sneeze getting swabbed and my sneezes are powerful, turn someone’s mask inside out.

      • LOL! πŸ˜‚ Your descriptions always paint a vivid picture in my head. Like a humorous comic. πŸ˜‚πŸ€£

I’ve had to swab patients and luckily nobody has sneezed on me, but they flinch a lot when getting it down and I feel like I am poking their brain or something. Not the most pleasant thing to get done, that’s for sure!

Yep, it’s a terrible thing that! But all the different faces people make might be fun to watch!πŸ˜‚πŸ˜³

      • Wow, I didn’t realize you had to do all that between patients, I thought it would be just between rooms. Always nice to get a first hand account of things. I still can’t believe how many people still don’t think this virus is a big deal. Like one guy I talked to today, he said, “you get a bit of a cold and it’s gone it 2 or 3 days, no big deal.” I wish some of these people could see what it’s like in a hospital. Yeah, hospitals here are filling up too, highest numbers they have had. We have been fortunate here, it hasn’t been too bad all along. Right now 133 lab confirmed cases, though our local top doctor said it’s likely 5 times that many. But only 3 in our hospital.

      • I don’t have covid but let me tell you that this is Day 6 of me being sick. My immune system is shot right now and I’m honestly surprised it’s not covid. Did that guy have covid or is he basing that off of what a friend said?

The hospital is a nightmare right now. I am a fairly novice nurse and my specialty isn’t dealing with covid patients, but covid has spread to my units as well. No protests from what I have seen but units that don’t deal with covid are now dealing with covid. The ICU may be within capacity but the issue is the number of patients that are being admitted for covid. Normal, otherwise healthy patients. They stopped counting cases in Alberta and are only counting hospital cases now. Here they say it’s probably 10x higher than what they are counting. Ontario seems to have it more under control than Alberta.

I was supposed to work this weekend so that’s 3 paychecks I won’t be getting because I had to call in sick. I also had to cancel beginning of this year so that’s 4 paychecks total. They don’t want us working even if it’s β€œjust a [chronic] 6-day head cold.” I can barely function as it is (too sick to go to the store right now) and the masks make breathing even more unbearable 😷 Thank goodness I don’t live paycheck to paycheck – I cannot imagine what it is like for families that do.

      • He never had Covid, but was repeating what he saw on the internet somewhere. Another person I talked to told me “it’s only old people and people with health problems that are getting sick and dying, so why not let them die and the rest of us won’t need restrictions.” I was talking on the phone with him and hung up at that point. Seems to me there are lots of healthy people getting sick, maybe not many die though. But a lot end up with long Covid even though they were healthy individuals. Seems to me that even if it is just a head cold it would make you more susceptible to catching Covid if you went to work.
That is a lot of paychecks to miss. Hope you are feeling better soon though.
