Tuesday’s Chatter. #5

Good morning everyone on this very windy and snowy morning! When I went to clean the snow off the feeders this morning I discovered we had received some freezing rain before the snow began. That means a layer of ice under the new snow and all over the feeders. The hanging feeders were hard to clean off since they were covered with ice. Plus, while I was out there the snow had stopped, but we were getting some freezing drizzle which put a crusty layer on top of the snow. So it took me longer than I thought to get everything ready for the birds and they were all around in the trees waiting for me to finish.

Along the path not far from the river.

The chickadees and nuthatches did not wait however, they started coming as I cleaned off each feeder. The redpolls then decided that was a good idea so they started coming down too. So I had birds all around me as I was cleaning off the snow from all the feeders. It is a very strong northwest wind, so the temp is starting to fall now and it is very cold out there, even though the temp is mild. It was 25F (-4C) when I was outside, now it is 20F (-6C), and is dropping down to about -30F (-35C) tonight and continuing with this strong wind so it will feel even colder.

I had to go out just now to clean the snow off the feeders again, there was another inch (2.5cm) of snow, so that makes a total of 4 1/2 inches (11.25cm) so far. It is still snowing, so maybe we will end up with the 6 inches (15cm) they had talked about. The birds are very busy this morning. I managed to count more than 50 redpolls this morning, and there were still more on the ground I could not see, so I will say there is 60 of them now, easily, perhaps more. And so many grosbeaks this morning! Both evening and the pine grosbeaks were here in high numbers, more than 40 for each of them.

At the river now.

I am actually quite certain there are around 60 pine grosbeaks now. I decided to count the males and females separately to make it easier and the total comes to 64. I am going to try that with the evening grosbeaks as well. Then I can get a more accurate count of my birds. I did make it down to the river again yesterday, it was a very interesting walk and the weather was great, though heavy clouds filled the sky. There was a couple of “interesting” things happen. I may do a separate post for that one, or write about it tomorrow morning. I hope you all have a wonderful day and God bless!
