Looking At Insects. #26 Butterfly
Hi again everyone and Happy Friday!
Well, we have another butterfly to look at today though not a very colorful one. But it has its own beauty anyway and a few minor markings on its wings. Just a few pale spots and a border at the bottom which is called a frosty gray.
This is the “Northern Cloudywing”, which is a member of the “skipper” family of butterflies and fairly large for a skipper with a wingspan of 1 1/4 inches (about 31mm). It flies quite fast, and they prefer blue, purple and pink flowers. They fly from late May to early July in our area. They have one brood per season and overwinter as a caterpillar. Would have mistaken this one as a moth, without your identification of it as a butterfly. It definitely blends into the terrain.

It was a rather unusual color though.

There are actually a couple others that are dark and plain too, but this one is the darkest brown.

The matte color I think is what makes it look like a moth. Very nice anyway!

I haven’t been at it long, I only know a few words and phrases right now. It’s a hard language, some of the words are pronounced much differently than they are spelled. Worse than French.

Actually it is quite a bit different, I was surprised. I thought of trying Swedish instead since my grandparents were from Sweden. But I don’t know anyone that speaks Swedish. 🤔

No, yes, yes. Plus I chase grackles away, several times. There was a flock of about 100 of them here today and they ate everything in sight! I got things ready for church too. Did 3 loads of laundry. Read, wrote, looked for 2 of my hanging feeders from last year, that took over an hour. Sigh. 🤔☔☔

Muffin has been talking again. Sigh. I was going to check on the bird feeder and heard a noise. Muffin came running out of the bedroom and slowly went up to the window, then backed away. I knew what that meant, a bear. I looked out the window and there is a big, and I mean big, bear trying to pull my bird feeder down. And, and, there was a cub with her!! That I don’t need, a mama bear and cub coming around! That’s also not so good for walking to the river. Sigh, sigh. 🙄🙄

That is not good for even going outside!!😬😬 I suppose she’s trying to make sure her cub has enough food to get through the winter… especially if it is coming early!!😬 Better move you feeder taking in time up by another 30 minutes!!😳

But the birds are still here looking for food until 7. 😯How can I feed birds if I don’t have the feeder out there. 🤔 The bear smashed that feeder anyway. That makes 7 feeders in 2 years at $20/feeder. I noticed they are now $22. 🙄Sigh. The mama was sure looking fat, even the cub looked chubby. 🙄

Cold, windy and rainy here. It was supposed to be sunny all day, but cold. We did get about 3 hours of sun this afternoon, then the clouds and rain hit. We did get up to 50 briefly though.😁🙄🙀😯

It arrived, but ya got me on that one. Must be a southern species, I am not familiar with it and it’s not in my book. 🤔But it looks like a type of fritillary. And the size would fit that. I have a nice pic of an orange butterfly that was on my leg and I still can’t identify it!😂😹📷🙄

There are lots of apps like that. I have tried several to identify insects, but without any success at all!!😯📷 I have never tried one for butterflies though. 🙄

Go to Google play and look up butterfly identification. 😁 It didn’t help me, but maybe you’ll have better luck.

Some will keep it, most do not, just pick one that won’t keep it. But they need your photo to identify it. I tried with mine and they gave me one, I looked it up and it was a blue butterfly!! Mine is orange! Sigh.😯😯

Yep, it began to rain, I looked up, no clouds, not even any close by, though there were clouds a distance away. I was told that a strong air current can blow rain quite a distance before it falls to earth. By why right on top of me!!??🤔🤔😯😯😮😮☔☔
