The Investigators, Inc. The Year End Case. Chapter 9. The Survivors.

Mandar, Kristina and the men were now on their way back. Mandar thought that driving back would be a good idea, it is slower and that is what everyone needed right now, to slow down. Especially Kristina. Mandar knew she was having a hard time with all of this. “You are very sad right now, my dear Kristina,” said Mandar, “a beautiful woman like you should not be sad. We accomplished our goal, so you must be worried.” She looked at Mandar with tears.

“Yes, I am worried, about the others,” she said, “I am here, safe, while they are…who knows what they are right now.” “But you needed to be here,” he said to her, “you did not abandon them, this was part of your job.” “But I did not do anything,” she said, “basically I was just along for the ride.” “No, my dear Kristina,” said Mandar, “you were a very necessary part of this journey. For one thing, you were my bodyguard in case Lavina did have a weapon.

I did not believe she would have one, but people can change, and she might have changed on that. And you were there to teach Storm his role too.” She tried a little smile. “But there is something else troubling you,” he said, “you are worried about Steve, if he will live or not. That is to be expected, he is your team leader. But I know more also.” He smiled at Kristina.

“I understand more than you think, my dear,” said Mandar, “with age comes wisdom, at least sometimes. Anyone else feel the same as you?” “Crystal does,” she said. “I see,” he said, “well, that is also to be expected. And all these girls are like family to you.” “Yes, we are all sisters,” she said, “I never had a sister and always wanted one. They are my family now. And the chateau…everything I owned was in there. It was not much, but it was all I had.”

“I see, well, that is why we are headed to Paris my dear Kristina,” said Mandar, “we can do nothing back home, except get in the way. So we shall stop in Paris and do some shopping.” Kristina looked at Mandar. “I have a total of 25 euros in my wallet,” she said smiling, “that will not buy much in Paris.” “Oh my dear Kristina,” he said shaking his head, “you will do the shopping, I will do the paying. I have no children, so I will play the father, you will be my daughter.”

He had a huge smile on his face when he said that. Then he got a phone call from Rock. “Mission accomplished on our end,” said Mandar, “so now we are planning to stay out of the way and stay in Paris for a day or two.” “Good,” said Rock, “would you be able to pick up the girls? They will be landing in Paris in about an hour.” “Why yes, we can certainly do that Rock,” said Mandar, “they can stay with us and I will bring them down when we are finished our little business. Unless they are needed right away.”

Rock said it would be better to stay away just now. He also told them how the kittens had alerted the men to where the others were located. “Yay kittens!” yelled Kristina, “they remembered their lessons!” Then she explained how she had been teaching them what to do in an emergency. This was one of the emergencies they covered. “They can communicate with you?” asked Rock.

“No, but they can understand,” said Kristina, “and Muffin translated their mews for me. But this means they might be able to communicate as they get older.” “Oh my,” said Mandar, “I will gladly buy your kitten Rock, just name your price.” Rock laughed. “If I did that,” he said, “I would be living outside from now on!” “Oh dear, well, perhaps Astrid will sell her kitten,” he said sighing.

Meanwhile… They found all of us and we were quickly transported to a hospital in the city that we have used before. Baldwin made sure there were guards on the doors and inside each room. No one but the doctors and essential nurses were allowed into the rooms. And they would be watched carefully whenever they came in to check on us. Poor Sky was injured quite a bit, but she will have a full recovery. The cats and kittens were fine, except they were covered with dust so they needed a bath.

One of the nurses at the hospital was tasked with that chore. The kittens loved their bath time, but Muffin and MC did not enjoy it very much. It was going to be a longer recovery time for us, though Crystal and Angel were first up and about. Sky and I were next. Tracy took longer, but she will to be okay. Galyna had her hands full, talking with the girls and helping them through this time. We have some changes, and challenges, ahead, but we survived this one.

The End.

  1. A good ending to a shorter story. Lavina is gone but there are so many other questions. Walter, Crandall and Chung–what happened to them? How long will it take everyone to recover?
