Ever consider how such a tiny bird can withstand a very cold northern winter?  Like the winters we have in this part of Canada.  They are such brave little critters flying about all winter and even chirping and singing like it was a nice day!  As I mentioned, these birds are tiny, as you can see in the photo above, and they have a high metabolism.  Which means they need to eat a lot to stay healthy and warm.  Now, other birds such as finches will put on a layer of fat to help them through the winter, but not chickadees.  That means they need a constant supply of food.  During cold winter days they can die in a day without adequate food.  Which is why, in winter, you will see them constantly eating all day long.  Often they are up before it is fully daylight to start their day, and will stay until it’s nearly dark before they head off to sleep for the night.

But God…

Gave these little birds a remarkable way to cope with the long cold nights.  After all, if they need to eat all day, which is short in our northern winters, then how could they possibly make it through the much longer cold nights?  On these cold nights they are able to lower their body temperature from a normal of 108 degrees F during the day, to just 86F at night.  This slows their rate of metabolism by 25%.  This allows them to make it through the night.  In the morning when they awake, their body temperature returns to normal and off they go in search of food.  They also have the ability to lower the temperature of their legs all the time so it takes less energy to keep the legs warm and they don’t feel the cold as much.

But How…

Did they manage to figure this out?  They didn’t need to, our God gave them this ability to survive in our cold climate so we would have these amazing little birds to bring joy to all who happen to come across them!

How Much More…

Then will God look after us!  He is with those who put their trust in Him, and He will guide and care for us in greater ways than even these tiny chickadees!

“Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your Heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?” Matthew 6:26.

God bless,
