This little lizard lives in the desert areas of the American southwest. It is about 16 inches long and has very wrinkled, baggy skin which looks like it is several sizes too big for it. So, why does it have this wrinkled skin? Well, when an enemy comes along it will quickly crawl into a crack in a nearby rock and grips tightly. Then it sucks in air and pumps its body up to 300% of its normal size! This packs the little ‘chuck’ in so tight in that crack that it’s enemy is unable to pull it out and so gives up to go after something easier.
This is desert country…
So there might not be rain for a long while, sometimes a full year or so. But ‘chuck’ is only active normally during late spring and early summer. It comes out in late March and proceeds to eat every plant it can find. Now beneath all that baggy skin along it’s sides are lymph spaces which it will fill with water whenever it manages to find some. By August it has used up its supply of water and goes into hibernation until the following spring while living on its food reserves from its summer of eating.
Speaking of plants…
They all grow on very alkali soil so these plants are full of sodium and potassium salts. Now, each summer this little chuckwalla eats enough salt to kill it. But somehow it doesn’t die. That’s because in its nasal passages are two glands which are connected to ducts that run forward to a pool inside the nostril. These glands are a desalination plant! They remove the salt from its blood making pure salt crystals which ‘chuck’ then sneezes out! How amazing is that?
Just think of these amazing facts! What an amazing God we have providing all this so the little chuckwalla could survive in a harsh environment! ‘Chuck’ has everything it needs to live and thrive even through hard times and attacks from enemies.
“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Philippians 4:13 KJV
“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Now unto God and our Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” Philippians 4:19,20 KJV
Our God gives all that little ‘chuck’ needs and He will give us all we need and when we need it. Wow, this really should cause us to give praise and glory to Him always!
