For a smile as wide as a country sunrise
Good morning to all of you! It was another beautiful day here yesterday. Still, I realize that most of you would consider these temps to be rather cool, especially this time of year, but for us it is fantastic. It was much worse than this last year at this time, so I am very happy indeed. I went to check on my river path yesterday afternoon, but it was not doing too well yet, which is what I figured. Due to the heavy growth of pine trees back there, the sun doesn’t get through to help melt that snow. So there is still a lot of snow, and ice, back along the path right now. So I didn’t go too far, no point in taking chances. After all, it took me 6 months to get back to walking properly again, I don’t want to mess that up now. It will take a bit more time before the ice and snow is gone back there. What we need is for temps to stay above freezing at night, which we are not getting yet. And some rain would be helpful too, it melts the snow faster in those sheltered areas.
And now, we will take a look at some bright flowers, even though they may not be the most beautiful for most people…
Here we have one of our wildflowers, the Canada hawkweed, which is not a weed. These are actually in the same family as daisies. They look somewhat like a very tall dandelion. These can get up to 2 ft (60cm) tall.
Another relative is the orange hawkweed, which can get to the point of taking over an area, but if you have a spot where nothing will grow, plant these, they will grow anywhere. They also look nice and butterflies and bees love them. So do hummingbirds.
And we will end off with this nice lavender daisy from France. I wish these would grow around here but our climate likely wouldn’t be very nice for it. I hope all of you have a wonderful day and God bless!

Can you eat the hawkweed the same as dandelions?

Apparently the leaves can be eaten, but they are a bit hairy so not sure if it would be nice. Personally I would stick with dandelions and forget the hawkweed. Try google to see what you can find there. I didn’t find much to help.

Are there bees there in Canada or only in the summer you find them ?

We have lots of bees in this area, but of course, only in the summer. They are usually out by the end of April, sometimes earlier depending on the weather.

You don’t have those things? Sounds like a nice place to live.

I think this winter we avoided snow and ice; could be the new normal… ears are not too close by, thankfully!

That’s the kind of new normal I like! I do like it here though, but the winters can get a bit long and severe sometimes. This winter wasn’t bad at all. Bears are out, saw some big footprints in the snow!

Personally I think it’s the most beautiful place in Canada, for summer living. But I’m probably a bit biased.😂
