Saturday’s Solitude #7.

Good morning everyone on this beautiful sunny Saturday! It was completely cloudy when I got up at 4:40 this morning but now it is just clear blue sky in every direction. And there is a fairly strong south wind blowing, hopefully meaning that it will warm up a bit from yesterday’s cooler temps. Actually we had 2 cooler days which most people enjoyed I’m sure. We’re not really used to having hot weather, especially so early in the season. Although at one time getting weeks of hot summer weather was quite normal. But that changed as things generally cooled off over the last 20 years or so.

Scramble, the red squirrel, my friend on the path to the river.

There was actually quite a bit of activity early this morning, birds were singing all around. Sounded so nice. Like walking to the river the other day. All along the path birds were singing. So many different species of warblers, vireos and others. The chickadees and nuthatches were in there too. The hermit thrush was singing, but they must be nesting a little further back than normal this year which is why I haven’t been hearing them. I really should wander around more off the path. I’m sure I would find more species of birds and wildflowers that way. However there is a bit more danger doing that as well, which is why I stay on the path except for some minor wandering around in order to get a picture of a wildflower or mushroom that I see from the path.

Bunchberry flowers are in bloom now.

It is such a beautiful time of year though, when the woods are full of life. Part of that wilderness solitude. But even town and city parks are full of singing birds this time of year. On my last walk it was so nice and calm too, which likely helped to hear more birds than usual. Though wind through the trees has it’s own beauty, it does make it hard to hear things. The sun through the trees shining on the path giving a dappled look to the ground, really so beautiful. Some areas are so thick and lush with new growth and leaves that it’s impossible to see beyond the path itself.

Amazing having 2 different days at the river that were calm.

Other areas that are thick with pines there isn’t much undergrowth besides low growing plants and wildflowers. The woods are full of wildflowers now, of all different kinds. Mostly white flowers right now. But most of our wildflowers are white. Yellow is the next most common color. Sitting at the river, alone, enjoying the beauty all around me. Wilderness solitude at it’s best. Hmm, it has gotten cloudy again, how odd. The chipmunks are still busy and a couple loons are flying overhead calling to another one down on the river. I haven’t heard the loons for a few days now so that was nice. I hope you all have a wonderful day and God bless!
