Steve And Muffin’s Wildflowers #58.
Hi everyone! Today’s wildflower is the “Veiny Pea”, also called “forest pea” or “bushy vetchling”. It is a native wildflower that likes sunny or partly shaded areas in dry open forests and thickets. It will grow from 1 to 3 feet (30 to 90cm) tall with a cluster of 10 to 20 flowers. Each flower is from 1/2 to 3/4 inch (12 to 18mm) long. It blooms from May to July and is a very beautiful member of the wild pea family. This one is common around our town and heading west, but is hard to find east of here it seems, until you get beyond an hour’s drive east. In Canada this wildflower can be found from Alberta to Quebec, and in the US it’s found in many states from the Dakotas to New York, down to Georgia and across to New Mexico, but not in states between S. Dakota and Texas or further west. Have a great Friday everyone and God bless!

There is a lot for sure, and this is only a small number, we have over 300 species that I have personally seen. I don’t have pictures of them all however.

I wouldn’t mind writing a book on flowers for our area. I have photos for about 100 wildflowers, that covers most of the more common varieties. Perhaps next year things will be back to normal and I can travel around more to fill in some other species. I missed some of our earlier species because of our lockdown this year. Now that’s interesting, my back is hurting too for some reason. I even lay down for an hour this afternoon, but it didn’t help. It was okay this morning. It was bad last night too, didn’t get much sleep.

A bear was on my deck last night, big guy, then he went and knocked over my landlord’s apple tree and had a feast.😳🐻🍎🍏🍎🍏

It wasn’t a big tree, about 15 to 20 feet tall. Yep, they sure do, any time of the day. My friend was out for his walk a couple days ago, 3pm, and he had just crossed the street and looked back to see a big black bear crossing where he had just done so! And he lives right in town, I’m more on the edge of town. I was planning to walk down to the river tomorrow, but after this bear knocked the apple tree down, I’m having second thoughts about that one. Sigh. I need to get out and walk though, can’t sit all the time.

Sometimes you just need to take a chance… be prepared carry the spray and get out there and do it!!

This particular bear spray is actually considered a restricted weapon, not even legal anywhere in the US. I had to get special permission to carry it, notify the police, get checked. So I can only carry it in wilderness areas where bears are known to be, including the path to the river. But in town it’s possible it could be stolen from me and used illegally. Could happen on the path too, but less likely.

Yep, there’s the regular stuff available at most sporting goods stores around here, but it doesn’t work as good, or spray as far. Then there’s this stuff and I wanted something that would stop a bear, preferably before he was close enough to bite me!😳😬🐻
