Wednesday’s Wanderings. #31

Good afternoon everyone! Wow, hard to believe that my morning post is now an afternoon post! I knew it was bound to happen sooner or later. I used to get my morning post out by 7am, then it gradually moved to 8am, then it just kept getting later all the time until, here we are, in the afternoon. Oh well, I’m going to need to work on that a bit, can’t have a morning post come out in the afternoon, that just doesn’t work. I’m still getting up early, though not quite as early as in the summer, but still. Oh well.

Speaking of early. The forecast said that there would be about 1/2 to 3/4 inches (1 to 2cm) of snow overnight. I looked out this morning and there was a bit more than that, 3 inches (7.5cm) to be exact. We also had a little bit of freezing drizzle on top of the snow, so there was a crustiness on top. It might all melt this afternoon though, it is supposed to rain later, then freeze overnight, which will make things a bit icy in the morning again. Oh well, the joys of winter.

Anyway, when I went to put the feeders out for the birds this morning it was 7:15 and still dark. I wanted to have everything ready for when the birds woke up and came looking for their food on this snowy morning. I turned the deck light on so I could see and…the chickadees greeted me right away. It was dark, but here they were looking for their breakfast. There was about a dozen of them and they were landing on the feeders before I had them in place.

It was fun having all these chickadees flying around me while hanging up the feeders. Both the red-breasted and white-breasted nuthatches are around today also, plus 8 blue jays and both the hairy and downy woodpeckers. I hope I can get a photo of the female downy woodpecker, I don’t have one yet. This is the first winter that a female has come around since I got my camera. She is quite friendly so I should be able to get a nice closeup of her. Well, it’s time to go, thank you once again for stopping by today. Have a great day and God bless!
