For a smile as wide as a country sunrise
Good morning on this first Friday of the New Year! And it is another cold day up here in the north with a temperature this morning of -33F (-36C), but there is no wind, yet. It is supposed to get windy however. It will be from the south however and is bringing with it some nice mild air, so the temperature tomorrow will be 14F (-10C), very nice indeed. But, with it comes some snow again, then back to the frigid cold Sunday. The joys of winter. And we are not even half way through winter yet. Oh well. The birds are hiding their legs and feet again this morning, but they sure are busy out there.
I went out at 7:45am to get things ready, the birds were just starting to show up. They are all getting very brave now, perhaps the cold weather has something to do with it, but it is nice anyway. Right now the sun is shining on frosty trees. The trees look quite nice against the blue sky, however, it is not a clear blue this morning, there is a haze up high, probably due to the cold. So it gives the sky a hazy blue appearance instead of that bright blue it usually would be.
The snow that is coming might also have something to do with that haziness. There is sure a lot of those grosbeaks out there this morning, both species, but they are hard to count since they keep flying back and forth from trees to feeders. And I only have the door window to use. But there is more than 30 of each species. And at least 2 dozen or more little redpolls. So far I have only seen the common redpolls, but I keep looking, hoping to see a hoary redpoll, which is a very white version of redpoll.
They generally stay further north, even in winter. Tough little birds. I would like to get a good photo of a hoary redpoll and there is still a possibility yet. Seems to be some arguing going on out there so I guess they must be out of seeds, or close to it anyway. Generally when there is lots of food they sit there quietly and eat. There we go, they are now happy again with more food, everything is back to regular chirping and no more arguing. Well, I hope you all have a wonderful day and God bless!
Steve and Muffin.

No it’s been brutally cold but I do hope so after the weekend. Next week looks a bit warmer. But I found a beautiful spot the outside door from my kitchen faces the south side, and the sun is right there, so I will stand there for a bit. Just at this moment, I took my juice and I was enjoying the sun on my face and I must say it got warmπ

Sounds nice! Even with the sun shining here it is still too cold. We will have it milder next week too, but it will be cloudy the whole time. Snow today, back to cold tomorrow and Monday, then the mild weather moves in.ππΊ

Well, our coldest night of the winter so far was -47F! Muffin and I are curled up together in my recliner. Well, she’s curled up, if I tried that I would never straighten out again!ππΉ

Thank you so much! Yes, there is a lot of ice and even the snow gets very slippery. I need to be very careful walking around outside right now.

I know I don’t say much brother, but I appreciate you. Every post you share brings me a smile in one form or another. From the antics of Muffin, the photos you take and even your mishaps(that hopefully don’t hurt too bad)
Thank you!
