Fabulous Friday! #8

Good morning everyone on this cold Friday! This is the last Friday of February, the whole month has gone by rather quickly. Soon we will enter March, normally our last month of winter, though some years winter can last until the end of April. I think this year might be one such year. That means a slow end to winter with lots of ice for weeks. But that is how it works out some years. I am still hoping for an early spring, though I am having doubts that will happen now. But it still could.

Baxter the blue jay.

A few pine and evening grosbeaks showed up yesterday afternoon, but they did not stay very long. Today there are none this morning, but there are all the little birds. It seems the redpoll numbers are staying between 30 and 40 right now. Those numbers should increase for a short time as we get closer to spring. That is because redpolls that have gone further south for the winter will be heading back north and stopping at feeders along the way. Redpolls can stay well into April some years.

Pine grosbeaks seldom stay later than about mid March. Evening grosbeaks stay here year round. It is nice to have Baxter and Betty (blue jays) here every day again. It was just so odd that all the blue jays disappeared for much of the winter. It is nice to see that this terrible cold weather will be leaving us finally and we will be getting back to something more normal for this time of the year. Normal winter temps for early March I mean. Then maybe I can get back to some normal winter walking again.

Red-breasted nuthatch at the suet.

It seems the birds have gone into hiding again, I cannot see even one bird out there right now. Just as I write that the redpolls came flying back in again. And I see at least one chickadee has shown up as well. So I guess they will all be back shortly. The sky is so clear and blue again this morning, the sun is shining so beautifully. It looks warmer than it is, but what a shock to the lungs going out to feed the birds this morning. That was cold! Nice to be inside on days like this. At least I am getting some indoor projects completed in this cold weather. Have a wonderful Friday everyone and God bless!
