Wandering Through Wednesday. #20

Good morning everyone on this very rainy Wednesday! There is a thunderstorm happening right now, lots of lightning flashes and the roaring of thunder. That lightning hit somewhere close, very bright and very loud thunder at the same time. I hope it does not knock out our electricity again, that seems to happen so often in this area. Hmm, another big flash of lightning close by with that loud crash of thunder right with it. But the birds are still busy at the feeders, more so than yesterday actually.

Male is in to feed. The male’s throat shows anywhere from black to bright red depending on how the light hits it.

Even the poor little hummingbirds are out here in the rain. There was a female finally showed up today, they are always about a week behind the males making their way back to their nesting area. Wow, that was an amazingly loud and long crash of thunder, so loud that it scared all the birds away. I made a bed for Muffin in the bathroom again and she immediately went there to lie down and wait for the storm, or storms, to pass.

Here we have it feeding and showing its wings.

There is supposed to be thunderstorms all day so Muffin will have a tough time getting any sleep today. That black bear was around again this morning at 7am. The neighbors big dog was outside and ran towards the bear barking loudly. However, the bear is bigger than that big dog and did not run away, so the dog stopped but continued barking, until his owner called him back inside.

The dog is about the size of a German Shephard, but like I say, the bear is bigger and I think he would win in a fight. An adult black bear can kill a large dog with one swat of his paw. Some of those loud bangs of thunder are really shaking this apartment. Muffin is not enjoying this at all. I went to check on her which she seemed to enjoy. I spent some time yesterday trying to get some nice photos of the hummingbirds and

Here the left wing shows quite nicely.

I am showing some of them today. They are such a fascinating tiny bird. They are native only to north and south America, but have been introduced, with varying degrees of success, in other countries. They are easily attracted to hummingbird feeders and are very interesting to watch. Unlike other birds, hummingbirds do not flap their wings up and down, but rather in a figure 8 motion. This way they can achieve lift on the downstroke and upstroke.

Here the male is sitting on a branch which is quite small, but because the hummingbird is so tiny the branch looks big.

And those wing beats are so amazingly fast that it is very difficult to photograph those wings except when they sit. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the hummingbird pics today. These are the ruby-throated hummingbird, the only species found in eastern N. America, except on occasion a rare sighting of another species will occur. Seems like the lightning and thunder has stopped for a while, but it is still raining, and the electricity is starting to flicker. Well, it must be time for more coffee, would you like some? Have a most wonderful day everyone and God bless!

  1. Steve, the hummingbird photos are great. With all your rain, you should not have so many forest fires this year. Here in the Far North the leaves have started to unfurl and will be full soon. They are more than a week late due to colder temperatures. Have a wonderful day!

    • Thank you so much! So true, forest fires should not be a problem this year, however, that can change quickly too, on this rocky, hilly terrain it only takes 3 to 5 sunny warm days to completely dry out everything. But the trees and plants are certainly getting a great start to the growing season. Leaves here are just barely starting to show and mostly on aspens and some of the smaller bushes. By the end of the month the leaves should be out, that would make things about a month late for us. It will be a short summer this year but there should be very lush growth too. Thanks, hope you have a great day!πŸ˜πŸ˜Ίβ›ˆοΈβ˜”
