For a smile as wide as a country sunrise
Good morning everyone! Here we are on day 3 of the New Year already. Time does fly quickly. It is a bit cooler this morning, but still not bad for January. It is 7F (-14C), which is a mild temperature for us. And it is supposed to stay mild for the next 2 weeks anyway. I can live with that. Sure is a big difference from last winter. It is more like the winter 2 years ago, except we have more snow this winter. But the temps are about the same.
Something surprising happened on the last day of 2022. There was a lot of birds around. That should not be surprising, but because there has not been many birds this winter, then it was a surprise. I heard a lot of bird chatter out there so I went to look. The windows were clear of any frost finally so I could actually see outside. There was at least 22 evening grosbeaks out there, perhaps more, but they were flying back and forth from the trees to the feeders so much it was hard to count them.
But I did see 22 of them on the feeders at one time. Plus, even more surprising, there were American goldfinches out there too! We do not normally get them here in the winter, though they are common in the summer. This is only the second time I have seen them in winter. There was at least 26 of them, again, they were hard to count so I am sure there were more of them in the trees. Plus, there was at least 1 male purple finch. His beautiful red really stood out against the white snow.
Purple finches are seen fairly often in winter, though not every winter. It was a great way to end the year. Some evening grosbeaks have been back each day since, though not so many. And, a few goldfinches have been back each day too, though I have not seen them yet today, but they usually come later. They must have been feeding at someone else’s feeder until now, and still do obviously since they did not all come back. I did not start feeding birds early enough in the fall.
I am sure that is why I do not have as many birds coming around as usual. Here in the north it is necessary to start feeding in September to get a good crowd for the winter. I actually like to feed year round, but those bears prevent me from doing that now. Sigh. It has been nice to have the new visitors though. As for my inside projects, things are going quite well. I can actually see some progress now. There is still a way to go however. But it is nice to see progress anyway. Thank you for stopping by for coffee today! I hope you all have a beautiful day and God bless!
Steve and Muffin.

Yep, sure does! Hard to believe I am able to touch such a large animal. Years ago I would never have thought it would be possible. But I didn’t try back then either.
