The Investigators, Inc. The Case of the Widow’s Mansion. Chapter 5. Kenaston.

John and his friend looked at his gun, but it was working perfectly now. He even put on a silencer and shot it, no problems at all. “That proves she is a ghost,” said Herman. “It proves nothing,” said John, “except the gun did not work for some reason.” “Well, why does it work fine now, but not before?” asked Herman. “I have no idea,” said John, “but I do not believe in ghosts.”

“I sure do,” said Herman, “and I say she is a ghost, maybe some of the others are ghosts too.” John just shook his head. Right then he got a phone call. “Well, did you kill her?” asked Kenaston. “No, the gun would not work,” said John quietly. “She is a ghost John,” said Kenaston, “she will end up killing you instead, and maybe all of us. You cannot win against a ghost.”

“I think you and Herman should go live in a ghost town,” said John, “maybe you can find more ghosts to live with.” “That is not funny John,” said Kenaston, “I just do not like the fact those PI’s are working on this. And we do not even know if Jackie inherited anything, except that old mansion, and it is not worth that much.” “She kept saying there was a book that was priceless,” said John, “but I went over every book in that library, and there are thousands of books there, but none are worth anything.”

“If it is priceless, it would be in a safe, not on a bookshelf,” said Kenaston. “I thought of that too, but I looked everywhere in here and could not find any safe,” said John. “Then why not give up?” said Kenaston, “we are wasting our time on this.” “No, I believe she did inherit something, but not a book,” said John, “I just have to find out what it is and take it. She is bound to lead me to it sooner or later.”

“It better be sooner or I am out of this,” said Kenaston firmly and hung up. “What now?” asked Herman. “We wait and watch for a while,” said John. Meanwhile, we had a meeting in our room, except for Kyan and Cinnamon who were watching Jackie. I would have included Jackie, but I wanted to tell the others about Lily and was not sure if Jackie could handle that information just yet.

We all agreed there must be a room, or rooms, hidden somewhere for John and at least one friend to be staying. But how did they eat? Unless all they ate was cold food, otherwise the smell of cooking food would be noticeable, no matter how they cooked it. Unless they were underground somewhere and had a good vent system that opened into the yard somewhere.

So Kat, the cats and I went outside to sniff around while the others looked around the mansion for a safe, or secret door. “Too bad this old fountain is not working,” said Kat, “it would look nice.” “Yes, I will ask Jackie about it,” I said, “maybe there is a way to turn it on from inside the house.” “I hear voices,” said Kat and she put her ear up to the fountain, “yep, there are voices.” I tried listening but could hear nothing. The cats tried listening too, but they could hear nothing, they just looked at each other.

Meow, meow.=Maybe ghosts can hear better than us. Meowy.=Yep, that probly it for sure. Meow, meow.=I glad she nice ghost, me not afraid of her. Meowy.=Me agree, very nice ghost, me not like bad ghost. Meow, meow.=Me not like bad ghost too like you. Meowy.=Yep, you and me both the same. “See what you have done to those two?” I asked, “now they believe you really are a ghost.”

“Maybe I am,” said Kat smiling and she hugged me. “Hey, people might be watching,” I said. “Well, we are married, so things like this are normal,” she said, “otherwise Jackie might get suspicious.” “Yes, you have a point,” I said. “And we were married in my old life,” she added smiling. “None of that kind of talk in public,” I said, “someone might hear.”

Meow, meow.=Now me get confusion. Meowy.=Yep, me confusion too. We walked around some more until Rock phoned me. “We found something Steve,” he said, “come take a look.” We went back inside and over to the large closet down the main hall on the first floor. It is just full of cleaning supplies of all kinds, but, the whole back wall was open now so we followed the passageway a short distance, but it ended nowhere.

While Rock was standing there looking around, Snow spotted a button on the wall right at floor level and she pushed it. The floor then fell out from under Rock and he suddenly found himself sitting on some old wood stairs. Surprising that he did not break them. We went down one level and there was a door on the right, but locked. That did not stop Rock, however, and he pounded his way through quite easily.

Meanwhile upstairs, someone had come to the door and the butler opened it. Catalina then hit the alarm…

  1. So Kenaston did not die. It is always much better to really get to know someone before hiring them for a big job like Baldwin Corporation. It is too easy to fake records and not really get to know one’s character. John is definitely quite a schemer. He probably married Jackie to get his hands on a fortune. He is very cold blooded. Did I miss something about Lily?

    • Yep, he is still alive, I had been wondering about that one, everything seemed to conveniently done with his death. True, but it is hard to get to know someone unless they live close by, which is not likely to happen. Benson, however, said he could recommend someone, so I will check on that person and see what happens. I certainly can’t do both and I don’t want to retire from The Investigators just yet. Yes, John obviously did not love Jackie, he just wanted money, but I wonder if there really is any. Lily is John’s girlfriend, even before he married Jackie. John is the type of person who only cares about one person, John. I wonder who the new guests are?πŸ€”πŸ‘©πŸ˜ΌπŸ˜ΌπŸ‘»πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ

      • The new guests are sure to not be a good thing. It appears they want in on the goods. Didn’t know that Jackie had money to pay for a butler. Yep, John is all about John.

      • The butler kind of came with the mansion. He was her uncle’s butler and is now retired, but continues to work just for room and board, since he now has a pension. Yes, I do not like uninvited guests showing up, that can only mean problems.πŸ€”πŸ‘©πŸ˜ΌπŸ˜ΌπŸ‘»πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ

      • Yes, I agree, but do they work with John, or someone else? Did Kenaston send them to keep an eye on things? I don’t think he trusts John too much.πŸ€”πŸ‘©πŸ˜ΌπŸ˜ΌπŸ‘»πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ

      • Kenaston may have sent the guests but if he doesn’t trust John, why is he working with him? Maybe, Kenaston and Herman work for someone else and are setting up Steve and the team along with John.

Then there is the finding of the secret passageway and the knock on the door at the same time! The timing is too close to be an accident.

      • Yes, it is quite possible they are working for someone else, maybe even Toledo. That was rather amazing timing for sure, too much of a coincidence which I don’t believe.πŸ€”πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ

      • Yes, Toldeo could be involved in this but they don’t seem to have all his technology. I guess the technology could be involved in the guns not firing but I thought that was because of your technology!

      • No, we had nothing to do with the gun not firing, that was just something odd that happened. A coincidence I also don’t believe. Someone stopped that gun from firing and it wasn’t a ghost.πŸ€”πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈπŸ‘»

      • Yes, someone who is very into technology and wanting to mess with John and perhaps Jackie. It could be part of a trap for you and your team. After all Kenaston, did recommend you to Jackie!

        Liked by 1 person

      • Yes, he certainly did do that, so it could be a trap for us, or for Jackie. I wonder if Lily could be involved in this? Maybe she thinks John is wanting to keep all for himself.πŸ€”πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ

      • People that are fearful would probably not be involved in this. You are dealing with professional criminals who have no problem killing others.

      • Yes, I have to agree with that assessment. But something is not sitting quite right. Just not sure what that is at this time.πŸ€”πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ

      • I certainly hope that is not the case, but anyone trying that better be better equipped if they want to topple us!πŸ€”πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ

      • John has to confederates who believe in ghosts but John does not. Kenaston and John have searched for the book and could not find it. John thinks the treasure is not a book. There is also something about the empty fountain–maybe a passageway underneath that acts as an echo chamber. Kat, (Crystal) is on her way to get her revenge. Rather than Crystal, she is referred to as Kat.

      • Yes, there must be some kind of passageway under that fountain, or a room perhaps, but it must connect to wherever John and his friend are located so Kat could hear them talking. I wonder why the cats couldn’t hear anything? And Kat, who is Crystal, said something else interesting.πŸ€”πŸ‘©πŸ‘»πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ

      • Kat said in her old life you and she were married. Then she said that Jackie might get suspicious if she didn’t see some PDA between you two. In other words Jackie is not to be trusted.

      • Yep, correct on all points! But I wonder how we could have been married? That would make an extra wife not accounted for.πŸ€”πŸ‘©πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ

      • You have a good memory. Yes, it was a short marriage of only one day. I don’t remember her name right now either. But I was never married to anyone named Crystal. Though there could be a name change. Or is she Kat? Or perhaps Jennifer? No wonder the cats were “confusion”.πŸ€”πŸ‘©πŸ™€πŸ™€πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ

      • There are so many name changes for so many of the people in the story, it is hard to keep track. It seems from the story line that Crystal is Kat on revenge. Or maybe, Crystal is a good actress. The cats are certainly confused and they do believe in ghosts!!!

        Liked by 1 person

      • I like your first thought, Crystal is Kat on revenge. I think Muffin believes it is the real Kat and that she is a ghost. Though at the moment she is a bit confused.πŸ€”πŸ™€

  2. HmmmπŸ€” Were you using play on words ? …just thankful that that the cats are with you ! πŸ˜»πŸ˜ΌπŸ˜ΌπŸ˜Όβ—οΈ That well may hold some clues for you ! Step lightly Steve ! πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈπŸ‘©πŸ‘©πŸ‘©β€πŸ¦°πŸ‘©β€πŸ¦±

    • No play on words here that I know of. Yes, it is good to have the cats along for sure, even if they are a bit confused at the moment. Some things are not what they seem to be right now and I think surprises are coming soon.πŸ€”πŸ‘©πŸ˜ΌπŸ˜ΌπŸ‘»πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ
