For a smile as wide as a country sunrise
Hello everyone and Happy Saturday! It is cooler and rainy today, showers really, not a steady rain. Yesterday was such a beautiful day, not hot, but it was sunny and nice with a south wind. The temperature was 74F (23.5C). Certainly different from last year when it was so hot in June. But this is more normal for June anyway. Well, we should get back to my story from last week (Click Here to read that one).
We had hiked in to our lake where we camped for a few days. The hike was about 6 hours so we arrived at about noon and set up our campsite. Then we relaxed for a little while, enjoying the hot, sunny day. We spent some time swimming, then Cathy wanted to walk around and check the area for birds.

A small island on our big lake, but it still has a cottage on it.
She was excited when I spotted a Black-backed Three-toed Woodpecker on a dead spruce tree. He was quite low too so we got a great view of it. That was one of the birds on her list since they do not have them in the southern part of our province where she lives.
Then when we were eating our supper we had some visitors, a family of Canada Jays, the parents and two young ones. We were eating hot dogs so I tossed some of my bun over toward them and all four came flying in.

One of the lakes we visited June 10th.
The young ones were squawking loudly, not knowing what to do with this strange, new food. But the parents diligently fed them and soon the young ones picked up their own pieces. Then the family flew off into the trees once again. Cathy was thrilled by this, having them come so close to us like they did.
This was another bird added to her list. Strangely, we never saw any last year when she was visiting. Canada Jays are a common bird here and can get very friendly with people. And seeing the whole family was an added bonus for Cathy since the young ones are a totally different color than the parents.

Another lake we visited on June 10th.
The lake was so perfectly calm that evening so we went for another swim before heading off to bed. There was a thunderstorm in the distance, something that Cathy did not like, she was absolutely terrified of thunderstorms. She would rather have a bear come around, than to have a thunderstorm show up. Something else we saw that first day were numerous wildflowers.
Cathy enjoyed learning the names of each wildflower, and a little bit about them. We found some late blooming blueberry plants, bunchberries and others too. I will mention more about them in part 3 next week. Well, guess I will stop there for today. I hope you all have a great weekend and God bless!
