For a smile as wide as a country sunrise
PLEASE NOTE: This post is intended for sharing fun and interesting facts on mushrooms. It is NOT INTENDED to be used as a guide for identifying edible mushrooms!
Hi everyone and welcome to another post on mushrooms! Wow, there are just so many different kinds of mushrooms that it can be hard to know which one to share next. The one I chose for today is a shelf mushroom called Purple Tooth.
I know, in the photo it looks green, but that is quite typical for these mushrooms as they often are covered with algae which give it that green color. These mushrooms grow from spring through to fall, but they can be found all year long. They are decomposer mushrooms helping to break down dead trees, stumps and branches. They will multiply and live for years until the tree is completely decomposed.

Mostly they live on dead deciduous trees, but can occasionally be found on dead conifers as well. They can grow up to 3 inches (7.5cm) across. They will often curl up in dry weather and then fill out back to normal when it rains. They are an interesting and useful mushroom, but are considered inedible. Well, that is all for this particular mushroom but I will be back with more each week. Have a great week everyone and God bless!

Wait… are you telling me these aren’t for “curious consumption”?I was really hoping to launch myself into orbit as a psychonaut—ideally landing somewhere in the stratosphere and not the local hospital! 🚀🍄🟫🤭

I don’t think these mushrooms would do either, though they might make you sick for a while. They wouldn’t be enjoyable to eat anyway, so you might not want to consume too many anyway. Thanks for reading Hilary, have a wonderful day! 😊🍄☕☕

That’s a fair point, Steve! Even if these aren’t the kind you’d want on a dinner plate and definitely not for psychonauts, mushrooms are still incredibly cool. They are perfect just for looking at and taking some nice pictures of.
Besides, even if you can’t eat them, you have to admit they are still pretty “fun guys” to have around! 🍄✨🤭

I definitely like your pun! Gave me some good chuckling! They are cool indeed, I love taking pictures of them, there are so many kinds, shapes, colors, sizes. It is hard getting out mushroom hunting now though, just too many bears around this town. By “now” I don’t mean “now”, I just mean “now”. It’s one of those days.🙄😂🍄

I totally understand, and I’d much rather you stay safe than risk your life searching for mushrooms in the big bad woods! 🐻🍄 Bears are definitely a solid reason to stay indoors.
Mushrooms truly are fascinating, though! At one point, I even looked into growing my own, even though I don’t actually care for the taste of them. I’ve also got quite the collection of mushrooms *clears throat*…..mushroom slippers, mushroom earrings, and cute lil’ clay mushrooms for my garden. They’ve got a whimsical vibe to them and I love it. 😂😁🍄

Wow, you actually found clay mushrooms, very nice, I haven’t found any here. I wouldn’t mind finding some small ones to put among my plants, maybe I should look on Amazon. Yep, bears are a problem for sure, though I would like to try a summer walk to the river again. I still might try a winter walk too.😊❄️🍄📷

I found some more of them today at Dollarama so now I’ve got 8 these miniature 🍄 Found them in the garden decor section but I had to go to 3 locations.
They’re small and not big at all but I noticed they sell quickly and are quite popular. I think each one was $1.75 which is a great bargain! I ended up getting 2 of each: 2 yellow/orange, 2 green/blue, 2 blue/white & 2 brown/indigo.

Sorry Hilary, somehow I missed your comment.😟
Our dollar store doesn’t have any but may have some closer to spring. I still need to check online and see if I can find something. Have a great day!😃🍄📷
