Looking At Insects. #3 Butterfly.

Hi everyone!

And a big oops from me! I forgot to include this little critter yesterday since insects are supposed to come out Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Sigh. My brain was likely still sleeping. Anyway, today we have a small butterfly from the group called Skippers. They do not have quite the strong flight of other butterflies and tend to stay close to bushes and tall grasses. This one is called “Hobomok Skipper” and is a very common early summer butterfly. They have a wingspan of 1 to 1 1/2 inches (25 to 37mm), so they are just a small butterfly. They seem to be more abundant than usual in our area this year. Well, have a great day and God bless!

Coffee And Chatting. #7

Good morning everyone! Time for a cup of coffee and a bit of relaxation. It is a beautiful, sunny morning here today, although there is a few little clouds still in the east, but nothing serious. The chipmunks, squirrels and grackles are busy out here this morning, everyone wanting their share of the peanuts. I have noticed something interesting though, that is, the squirrels seldom come by themselves.

Blue jay photos for today, but some older ones.

If one shows up, then another shows up at the same time, and sometimes, like this morning, all 3 of them show up! That naturally makes things a bit noisy out there with all the “arguing” taking place, plus the odd bit of actual fighting as well. And all 3 were here this morning so it was especially noisy. Oddly, they all left at the same time as well.

Whenever the squirrels were chasing each other one of the grackles or one of the chipmunks, would quickly come in and grab a peanut and run off with it. One grackle, the biggest of the group, had taken a peanut and gone off to the side and broke it open. He had just broken it open and a chipmunk came running across the deck scaring the grackle and the chipmunk stopped and picked up the contents of the peanut and off he went.

I think these are all ones I have not used before.

The grackle just looked at the spot for a moment before coming to get another peanut, which was not so easy with the 3 squirrels running around. But he tried and almost did it, but a chipmunk came which scared the grackle. The chipmunk got 2 peanuts before Jasmine, the squirrel, got back and chased him away. She then proceeded to scare away all chipmunks and grackles she could see.

The big grackle finally did get his peanut and flew off with it. Plus, while Jasmine was chasing one chipmunk another one would come and grab a peanut or two and be off just as she was coming back. This kept on until the peanuts were gone and Jasmine was left with nothing. She looked up at the door so I handed her a nice big peanut.

Blue jays are such a beautiful color.

Now if she would learn to share with the chipmunks, like Jasper learned to do, she would get enough peanuts too. Being greedy can lead to getting nothing at all. Oh well, she might learn eventually. Looks like a few more clouds showing up again. Time to see about some more pictures while the sun is still shining. Have a great day everyone and God bless!
