The Investigators, Inc. The Sniper Mystery. Chapter 6. Baldwin.

I ask Kat for her gun. “What would happen if I shot at that window?,” I ask Baldwin. “Don’t do that, the bullet would fly off any direction!”, he exclaimed. No one moved as I shot at the window beside Alexina and Galyna. The bullet went right through. Baldwin stood there amazed at what he saw. “But my company changed all the windows,” he said quietly.

“They were supposed to do that, but they just put new glass in the windows,” I said to him, “and the security system you had put in here with your security company is really just listening devices in every room of this chateau. That means that someone is listening to everything that is said in here. So there we have our traitor. But who is listening in and where? And who is paying the Stinger? We need to wait a few more minutes to find out some more details. Sit down Baldwin, relax for a bit.”

“The way this is going, all the evidence is pointing to me,” said Baldwin. “That is true,” I said, “but I know you are not the traitor.” Muffin comes over to me. Meow, meow.=Chung say human Shirley poisoned, might die. Baldwin looked, stared really. “That makes things look even worse,” he said quietly. Then Annelie’s phone rings. “Hey girl, meeting start yet?”, asked Jake. “Yes, it has,” she said, “but how did you know?” “I asked him to do me a favor,” I said, “turn up the volume so we can all hear.”

“You were right,” he said, “Stinger is not getting paid the usual way. The money is going straight to a numbered account in Switzerland. I wish I did not have to say who the money is coming from.” Poor Angel, she broke down crying at that point, knowing who the traitor was. Galyna went to her right away. “It was not easy getting the information, I had to use some big connections to find out,” said Jake.

“I will make sure you get paid for this one Jake,” I said. “Forget it, I will do this one free,” he said, “the money is coming from Baldwin, or rather one of his accounts.” Baldwin put his head down. “I kind of thought it was Shirley from early on, but I did not want to believe it,” he said, “but I checked, and there is money being sent out after each of the killings, and yes, going to that bank in Switzerland. But I just do not understand why she did it.”

“Jealousy Baldwin,” said Jake, “she did not like having all those girls around so she figured this would be a safe way to get rid of them since you would never likely suspect her. So she tracked down John to see if he could help, and John knew Stinger and was only too happy to help get rid of Steve’s team. He thought it would be a great way to take Steve down and hurt him along the way. And Steve, you are on the list too now, so please be careful, your team needs you.

And I got the info out about Stinger not doing his job, but still collecting the money. There are now 4 contracts on him, he will not last long.” “What is he talking about Steve?”, asked Rock. I told the cats to get the evidence. Soon they came back with Jennifer, Carine and Kristina with them. “Stinger killed Candace, Kara and Kira,” I said, “but since he was so predictable with how he killed, we had a shield made from bullet proof material from one of Baldwin’s companies.

It is the same color as their skin and fits over their forehead covering the area he always aims for, so they remained protected. When they felt the bullet hit, they fell and there was some real blood like liquid in this protective device which came out making it look like they were bleeding. Very realistic.” “Kinda taking a chance though,” said Jake.

“Not at all, we tested it on a real person first, with one of Stinger’s own rifles to make sure it would work,” I said. “Who would volunteer for a stunt like that?”, asked Jake, quite amazed. “It was my husband,” said Kat. “Now you are someone I would work for,” said Jake. “You already did,” I said, then I turned to Baldwin, “I know how much this must hurt.”

“I will live,” he said, “but I think Angel is having a harder time than me.” Then Chung called me. “Shirley says she took poison, she knew you were getting close to her and she did not want to go to jail,” he said. “How is she doing?”, I asked. “She has died,” he answered. “Steve, find this Stinger, and John, and stop them,” said Baldwin firmly, “I will get this chateau fixed, and clean house in my companies.”

Musings For Monday. #17

Good morning on this very chilly Monday! We are very much below our normal temperature for this time of the year. It is 18F (-8C) this morning, but feels much colder due to the strong north wind. It is also cloudy with some light snow, and because of all the rain we had on the weekend, everything is covered with a layer of ice right now. It is treacherous just walking out on the deck this morning. Fortunately I was expecting it this time so no mishaps happened which is nice.

Male purple finches on a rainy day.

But, warmer weather is coming by the end of the week. Hopefully. Though it is rather hard to trust weather forecasts at times. The snow has now hardened into solid ice once again and it will take a lot to get it melting. We will have snow on the ground into May this year. Skamper and Coffee, two more of my chipmunks woke up over the weekend and came for peanuts. But because of the rain I wasn’t able to spend time outside with them, except briefly yesterday.

Nice to see that the chipmunks are starting to wake up and come around again. I did not see Pocket though, and he was out earlier until our last snowstorm hit. Hopefully he will come back out again soon too. I hope all the others survived too. I know they would not have starved over the winter anyway. Not with all the peanuts they got from me last year! I am glad the bears are not coming around yet anyway, that would be a problem since I cannot stop feeding the birds just yet until warmer weather returns and stays with us.

My handsome fox sparrow, also on a rainy day.

Hopefully bears will not be such a problem during the day like they were last year. I don’t care if they come around at night, but during the day is just no fun at all. I like to spend time out on my deck if the weather is nice. And go walking, once the snow and ice is gone from the path to the river. It might have to dry a bit too. With all the melting snow, and now this latest 2 inches (50mm) of rain, there is one area of that path that will be under water too deep to walk through without getting rather wet.

Sir Henry, on that same rainy day, which was Saturday.

Oh well. Minor details. Still lots of redpolls around, somewhere about 100 or more, same with the juncos. There are more evening grosbeaks now too, around 40 of them, and a dozen grackles. Still just my one fox sparrow. Plus chickadees, nuthatches, hairy and downy woodpeckers. And of course my gulls. Jasper and Jasmine come around regularly, so does Chase when he gets the chance. That Cooper’s hawk still comes too, several times a day. Well, time for me to head out for some shopping. Thank you for reading today, hope you have a marvelous Monday and God bless!

Steve and Muffin.
