For a smile as wide as a country sunrise
Good morning and welcome to the first Sunday of the New Year! Well, it is still cold, but tomorrow should be a bit nicer before heading back to the deep freeze again on Tuesday. But at least we get one day’s reprieve from the cold so that is nice. You may have noticed I did not get the first chapter of my newest mystery story out yesterday. It was just one of those days where things were not working out the way they should. Therefore some extra things had to be done and that left me no time to get it out. Sigh. Not a good start to the New Year or the new series.

So I guess we will go back to the normal schedule and start the new story tomorrow. Although I could do it this afternoon, but I doubt that will work out. It was exceptionally cold yesterday, it really was. So the birds were exceptionally busy. And they certainly ate a lot of food. I did not see any of the squirrels yesterday, I guess they decided to stay closer to home. Or they are scared of the new dog that lives here with that new tenant in the house. He is a huge dog. And he runs around the yard chasing the squirrels whenever he sees them.

It was too cold to stay out with my birds yesterday, though I did try a couple of times. But I did not last long. Being outside is the only time I can see the birds now, my windows are frosted up completely. Usually I seal the windows which keeps them clear, but I could not get the right stuff this year. So I tried a different product which was supposed to do the same thing. It did not work. And I do not think it will come off easily in the spring like the other stuff did. Oh well.

Too late now to do anything about it. Muffin is not happy though. She liked looking out that one window at night, now it is impossible, though she keeps trying. She still has the bedroom window which is the only one that does not get frosted, but there is nothing to see out that window at night I guess. These bright and cheery flowers are just the thing for a cold day. Have a great day everyone and God bless!

Good morning to all of you on this very chilly New Year’s Day! We have a beautiful, sunny morning here with a somewhat hazy blue sky. And when I went out to feed the birds this morning I nearly froze solid with that temperature hovering around -42F (-41C)! We often start the year with cold weather so it is nothing new. But that does not make it easier. The featured image at the top was taken last year on New Year’s day down at the river. It was not quite so cold last year at this time. The cold weather came a little later.

I was hoping to walk down to the river this year too on January 1st, but that was before they forecast this cold weather. Now I will wait for a break in the cold. But I can imagine what it is like down there. The river is likely frozen over completely this year, but not because of the cold weather. It stayed open all winter last year, even in the cold. And it does most winters, due to the strong current in the river. But this year they are letting very little water out of the dam, which is a little upstream from where I go walking. Therefore there is not much current so the river is freezing in places it normally does not. It is just one of those years.
Yesterday I went out with more seeds and filled up the feeders. The pine grosbeaks barely waited for me to finish and they were down eating. Even on the feeder which is on the deck. I was standing right beside that feeder and they came down, sitting beside my arm munching away. I talked to them and they looked at me, but they were not afraid of me. Jasper and Garnet were both here yesterday, though I have not seen them yet today. But I am sure they will visit later.

However, all the birds are here, and all came nice and early for another day of eating. I only have 2 blue jays left now and they do not stay around for long. But the numbers of the other birds continue to increase, so they must be spreading the word that this is a good restaurant to visit. Good food and good service is what we give here! Once again, Happy New Year to you all, I do hope it will be a great year for everyone! Have a wonderful and enjoyable day and God bless!
