Steve And Muffin’s Wildflowers #34.

Hello everyone and welcome back to our wildflower series this week! Today’s wildflower is the “yellow pond lily”, also sometimes called the “bullhead lily”. They are a common water lily and can be found in ponds, small sheltered bays of lakes and marshy areas. Mostly they grow in sunny locations but can also be found in areas that are partially shaded. In the picture above is one that is blooming and other buds that are coming to the surface. They usually stick out of the water, sometimes up to 12 inches (30cm), on stiff stems and the plants can grow up to 7 feet tall in the water. They like a mucky type soil in the bottom of the pond. This is a native wildflower that blooms from June to August. In the picture below is a leaf from one of these yellow pond lilies and it was about 12 inches (30cm) long by about 8 inches (20cm) wide.

I hope you have a wonderful day and God bless!

Sunday’s Sunshine #13.

Good morning everyone and Happy Sunday! It is a beautiful, sunny morning with just a light breeze, here at Steve’s Country. Smoke is in the air. Yes indeed, there are several forest fires around the northern part of our province. But none are close to where I live, yet. But smoke from a couple of those fires came in last night, though it’s not really as bad as what they said it would be like. So that’s good.

Viola.

The birds are singing happily. A family of chickadees are out here this morning, so I put just a few sunflower seeds out for them which they found right away. The chipmunks and two squirrels are taking turns hauling away peanuts. That’s one time the chipmunks really beat the squirrels. A squirrel carries away one peanut, a chipmunk will carry away 3 or 4 peanuts.

Dahlia.

That’s due to their huge cheek pouches, something that squirrels don’t have. Certainly saves a lot of trips. Grover and his mate showed up and each made two trips taking peanuts back to the nest. Can’t remember if I mentioned this, but there is another new member of the chipmunk group. Most likely it’s Scooter’s brother, though he could be from a different family.

Lily, after a shower.

Since we did good with this last time, I’m going to ask for help naming this little guy too. It is a male, so if you have a name for him, please let me know in the comments and we will do the same as last time. Tomorrow we’ll let Muffin pick out the new name for our little chipmunk friend from all of the entries. She did a good job, after I crumpled the paper with each name on it, into a ball. Then she scoops it out of a bowl. It’s a beautiful summer morning. I hope you all have a nice sunshiny day and God bless!
