For a smile as wide as a country sunrise
We were about to give up when Cinnamon came back with her new cat. “Hey Steve,” she said, “Rusty here can tell us how to get inside the sneaky room.” “Sneaky room?” I responded, “and I guess you are Rusty, nice to meet you.” Meow.=Me happy see you too. See over by corner, small piece of white stuff?” Cinnamon took him over to a small piece of siding at the corner of the house.
Rusty said it comes off, so Mac tried, but was unable and he did not want to break it. Meow.=Need to push top and bottom in corner. Mac did so and the siding piece flipped open sideways. Underneath was a combination lock of some kind. “That may not be easy to open,” said Miles, ” we do not know how many numbers are used.” Meow,=5 numbers, 2, 5, 7, 3, 8.
Mac pressed the numbers as Rusty said them. Rusty had previously told us not to stand on the brick patio. No wonder, when the numbers were pressed, a door opened on that patio, with stairs going down to a room next to the basement. At the bottom of the stairs was a steel door, locked of course, but Miles had that one open rather quickly. In we went. “Strange there does not seem to be any alarm system in here,” I said.
“No need for it,” said Miles, “that number code lock would stop most anyone since it would likely lock permanently after 2 or 3 false tries.” Must admit, that made sense, and someone would have to know it was here too. Again, there was a ladder going upstairs, so Mac, Aari and I went up there with Storm, while Tiia stayed downstairs with the others.
There was a large safe downstairs, an older model, so Miles went to work. But his hearing was not good enough for that kind of work. Then Miles looked at Rusty. “Can you hear good little friend?,” he asked. Rusty’s ears went straight up. Meow.=He call me friend, he call me friend, not say I stupid cat like other humans around here. Yep, me can hear super good.
Miles showed Rusty where to put his ear and together they had that safe open quickly. Miles smiled at Rusty. “Thanks my little pal,” he said, “we make a good team.” Rusty was so happy to have found some friends at last. “I will take you home with us,” said Cinnamon, “providing Steve says it is okay, and I know he will, but he is the leader, so we need his permission.”
Now Rusty was a bit nervous, not knowing what I was like. Inside that safe was $50 million dollars, plus a lot of gems, including rubies, emeralds and diamonds. And a lot of perfect pearls too. Even better was a list of people working for Mr. Fenn, with addresses.
And there was a list of businesses that were owned by Mr. Fenn across Canada and a few in the US. Looks like it was mostly a Canadian operation. But there were also organizations listed where he got drugs and people for his organization. The people were basically slaves. He is coming down for sure.
Meanwhile, back at the chateau a white van drove up and stopped at the steps. Two of the girls were at the front door. “Hi,” said the man, “My name is Ted Corner, I was a friend of Steve in high school. Some friend and I are vacationing in Europe and since we were close I wanted to stop and say hi to Steve.” A voice comes through the speaker. “Everything fits,” said Tracy.
Then Sky came out in her new wheelchair. “Steve is not home right now and likely will not be back for days, I am sorry you missed him.” “You must be his wife,” he said cheerfully, “may I shake your hand?” The girls came and stood next to Sky. “Yes, you may,” she said. He came up the stairs and while shaking her hand he spoke quickly and quietly.
“I am being forced to do this,” he said, “these men are here to kidnap you for a Mr. Fenn.” Sky immediately pressed a button on her wheelchair and a loud alarm sounded along with “Code Red A, Code Red A”. The rest of the girls came out of the chateau and the remainder of the security team from Baldwin Corp came running from behind the house. Men jumped out of the van and began shooting.
Ted fell immediately, but everyone returned fire. Tracy, from inside, pressed a button and an explosive detonated under the van, flipping it over onto its side. After all was done, none of the men survived, and none on our side had been killed, but 2 security team members were wounded.
Back to us. Upstairs we found a lot of information about gambling and other things that Joshua was involved with here in the city. We took everything we could and went down the ladder. The others were already carrying stuff from downstairs to the vans. Mr. Fenn will not like this at all, and it should put Joshua in poor standing with Fenn as well. Perfect! Everything was locked up nicely and we were soon on our way…
To Be Continued.

Welcome back everyone! So nice to have you with us again today. Hmm, let me see, here it is, Journal #1. Now to see what we have for us today. As you know, in this post each Saturday we look at something from my past to share with you. It might be fairly recent, or years ago. Today it goes back quite a few years. It was a cool, though mainly sunny day in July. Today is also cool, but mainly cloudy.
Anyway, I decided to go on a short hike in an area where I had not been before. This time I actually remembered to tell someone where I would be going and approximately when I would be home. Yes, I agree, that was quite amazing, too bad it did not continue on a regular basis. I left early in the morning and drove to my favorite restaurant for breakfast.

Male Canada Warbler.
There was no one else in the restaurant, so the waitress sat down with me to talk. I then continued to drive to the spot. I parked the car and began my little hike down what was once a road of some kind, but now was barely visible in places. I just wanted to see where it went. I get curious sometimes. After about 30 minutes the road disappeared under the water of a beaver pond. I kept walking.
The water was not deep anyway and it was not long and I was on the other side, with wet feet. Oh well. At this spot I saw a Canada Warbler, a very small but brightly colored bird. A little further on I heard some noise on the road ahead of me. There were so many small willows, alders and aspens growing up on that road it was hard to see very far ahead.

White-tailed Deer, buck, growing new antlers.
I tried not to make any noise myself as I moved along slowly, hoping to see what was ahead of me. I was hoping it was not a bear. Finally I saw it, a White-tailed Deer, a buck with new antlers growing nicely. I tried to get closer but I stepped on a stick that snapped. Rather loudly. The deer ran off into the trees not to be seen again. Sigh. At this point there was a nasty deer fly that was determined to take some of my blood.
After a few unsuccessful attempts to swat the fly, a dragonfly came swooping in and grabbed it, sitting down on a branch to enjoy it’s meal. I always enjoy having dragonflies around me when I am out walking, they do not often miss, unlike me. It was a Common Whitetail, female, that helped me out that time. I saw another dragonfly too, but it would not sit down anywhere, so I was unable to identify it.

Female Common Whitetail dragonfly.
Further on down the road there was a loud crashing through the underbrush and two squirrels came running across the road just ahead of me. Amazing how such small creatures can make so much noise. One of them stopped on the other side of the road and began chattering. The other one climbed a tree and chattered back. I guess the road was kind of a boundary between their territories.
I tossed a piece of a cookie to the winner of the chase and he quickly ate it. The road began going uphill now, quite steep actually. At the top of the hill the road turned to the right and… it disappeared completely. Which means that was the end of it, but why? There was nothing there, no evidence of anyone living there in the past, no evidence of work being done in the area and I walked all over the area just to make sure.

Scramble, my Red Squirrel friend, along the path to the river.
Oh well, I stopped there to eat my lunch under some beautiful Jack Pines. Oddly, there were no squirrels present. It had also gotten cloudy now and it felt very cool, especially since it had also gotten very windy. I decided to head back quickly. It began to rain a bit before I got to the beaver pond. It was not supposed to rain, it was supposed to be sunny, sigh. I did have my jacket which kept me from getting wet.
Then there was the beaver pond which I began walking across. I forgot to mention there was a small wood bridge over a stream, but the bridge was solid. However, I was on the other side of the bridge this time. It was not so solid and my foot went through causing me to fall slightly, landing on my knees. Not too bad really. I had extra jeans with me anyway, something I learned a long time ago when hiking with Dad.
Oh well, it was a nice short hike even though I did not discover what the road was all about. But I did enjoy myself so that made it worthwhile. It is always good to get out and enjoy the quiet solitude of the forest. Thank you for stopping by today, have a wonderful weekend and God bless!
