Well, here we are at the airport, everything went okay for Muffin and I. The police did ask us some questions, but nothing serious so it didn’t take long. But where is our driver? He should have been here by now. Just then a woman comes up to us and introduces herself as Rossana, our new driver. What happened to our original driver?, I ask. She said he suddenly got sick yesterday and died early this morning. He had asked her to take his place. Meow, meow! What do you mean it’s time to head back home? We just got here and the only place we’re going is out to that palace. Muffin gives a big sigh, meow. (fine).
But now, where is Olivia? It sure is taking a long time for her with the police. Did they find out her connection to those 2 men? Will she say anything about us? Hmm, I’m getting as bad as Muffin. This case is sure off to an unusual start. There’s Olivia finally. She says that she needed to do a couple things after the police interview. That’s why it took her so long. Meow, Muffin whispers to me. Yes, I agree, what was she doing?
Rossana says we need to hurry if we want to make it to the island before nightfall. Okay, we have everything, off we go. The excitement begins Muffin, I say. Meow? (it’s going to get worse?) Stop sighing so loudly, I say to her, you might worry everyone. Meow. What do you mean, good because you’re already worried and you want company? That’s not the way to look at this case. Meow, meow. (good way as any to look at things). We managed to get everything in the car, then off we went. Rossana wasn’t wasting any time getting away, if this car had wings we would be airborne now.
I just want to make sure we get there before night, she says. I was just hoping we would make it, period. Meow! Quiet Muffin, no, we’re not going to die. There it is Muffin, the island with the palace, it looks so beautiful. Meow, meow. What do you mean, enjoy it, it might be the last thing we do? Don’t talk like that, you’ll end up scaring everyone. Meow. (good, I’m already scared). Rossana starts to slow down and says the boat we will use is just ahead. Just then a large truck coming the other way pulls over right in front of us! Rossana swerves to miss it and we go off the road plowing our way down the hill toward the lake and…
I open my eyes, Muffin! Muffin, where are you? Her little gray head peeks over from the front seat. Muffin and I had been sitting in the back seat, which certainly helped in the crash. I’m amazed that we are still upright, but the car is a mess. Meow, meow!(I’m trying to wake up Olivia and Rossana!). I manage to push the door open and get out. I had to pull Olivia and Rossana out through the side windows, there was just no way to open those crumpled doors. I took them as far as possible from the car, then went back and got all our stuff out.
Rossana wakes up and gives me all the keys I will need and tells me to get out of there quickly. She will look after Olivia and bring her over to the island another time. Rossana didn’t want anyone to know we had been in the car, so she said to make sure we don’t leave anything behind. Muffin checked the area while I checked the car, just to make sure nothing was left there that could be tied to us. Then we left quickly just as a car stopped along the road. Did someone just try to kill us, or was it an accident? Can we trust Olivia and Rossana? What awaits us over at the palace?
To be continued.
