A Summer Walk.

Hello everyone on this sunny, but cold, Easter Sunday!  This is cold, even for us, for this time of year.  And there’s a strong wind too which makes it feel even colder.  No melting today, everything is frozen solid like ice out there today.  So amazing after the few warm days we did have.  But it is so nice with the sun shining, it makes one think it is much warmer, until going outside.  But I enjoy the sunshine, it just makes everything feel so much better.

Beginning our walk.

So I thought about going for a nice warm summer walk.  Not in actual fact obviously, but just thinking about those nice days of summer when walks are just so enjoyable.  How about it?  Would you like to come along with me on a walk down to the river?  Let’s see if our memories can remind us of some beautiful times.  So for a few minutes we can lay the stresses of the present day behind and enjoy some beauty around us.  So, grab a cup of coffee and join with me now…IMG_7982

It’s a nice easy path to follow down to the river, most of this first part is basically level walking through the trees.  Along here it is mostly spruce, aspen and birch trees.  But there is a few white pines as well.  The grass can grow long through this first part of the path as well.

Dragonflies are flitting around us as we walk, helping themselves to all those flies that might bother us if they were not here to deal with them.  And look over there, it’s a white admiral butterfly.  Don’t see too many of them around here anymore.  Guess we disturbed that little red squirrel, there he goes running up that tree, stopping to chatter at us for entering his territory.IMG_8825

There’s a cleared area here where the hydro line comes from our local dam.  Stop for a minute and look up on the wire.  It’s a broad-winged hawk, he’s not paying much attention to us.  No doubt he’s looking for lunch among all the weeds and grass below him, such as a mouse or even a grasshopper.  This is one of our smaller hawks, about the size of a crow.  There he goes, guess he decided to look elsewhere without so many people around.

Here we go back into the trees again, a lot more white, and red, pine trees in this next area as we make our way down to the river.  I say “down” because we do go way downhill to the river from here and this first part is full of rocks and boulders so you have to watch your step, it is fairly steep.  But fortunately it’s dry this time of year so there is less chance of slipping on the rocks.

Since I’m taking the picture looking down, the path looks deceptively level, it isn’t however.

That wasn’t so bad, now we have a short more level section of the path before our final descent to the river itself.  Lots of spruce and aspen through this area too, but now as we head downhill again it is mostly the pines once more.  And the path is covered with a very thick layer of pine needles which makes for soft and silent walking.

Along this last section we can finally see the river through the trees.

Hmm, perhaps we should continue our walk tomorrow as we finally get to the river shore.  Then we can stop for a bit and have some coffee and cookies for our Coffee With Steve post.  I hope you have enjoyed this today and please come back for part 2 tomorrow.  Please stay safe everyone, enjoy your day and God bless!
