Daily Pics #283.

Good morning everyone and Happy Winter! Actually, winter really began about a week ago when temps stayed below freezing night and day. But some people might not agree with that idea. However, today no one could disagree that winter is here. Just have to look at the pics today. We received nearly 4 and a half inches (11cm) of snow overnight. That means winter to me. I don’t go by the “official” season designations on the calendar, they just don’t apply up here in the north. October 21, winter has arrived. Yes, it does look beautiful at times. From inside. Though many people up this way say they love winter. I have heard a lot of people say that. Right before they begin discussing their plans to head south for the next 5 months. This winter it seems we can expect at least 6 months of winter. Minor detail. We northerners can handle it. Right.

The poor birds out there this morning were not too happy. There are around 100 or more little juncos. They feed on seeds on the ground. The ground is covered with snow. They look like big ants crawling around on the ground desperately looking for food. Good thing I can help them out a bit, but when I toss seeds out for them they just sink in the snow and the birds can’t get them anyway. So I spread seeds on the deck and they come up here.

It is a very busy morning at the feeders, there is easily about 250 birds out there altogether. Hungry birds. Good thing I bought extra bird seed on Monday. I haven’t seen Theodore yet, that’s kind of odd. Jasper was here when it was just starting to get light. His first time with snow. He was having fun though. Running along the branches, knocking snow onto the ground. Then coming down and tunneling through the snow. Just wasn’t enough light for taking pictures right then however. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the snowy pics for today. Have a wonderful day and God bless!

  1. bbbbbbrrrrrrrr….
btw…it is supposed to be in the mid to high 80’s here today. but it was a bit fall like weather this morning as it is cool, a heavy dew was left on the cars, and a light fog was drifting through the trees.

  2. Steve, your photos take me back to my college days in Montana when an early winter arrived in late October. The pine trees looked awesome in their snowy shawls, but the drivers weren’t happy campers.

    • Late October winters are quite frequent here, but around November 7 is most normal for us. The area around us is earlier but we get it a bit milder here due to the lake. That first snow usually catches a lot of people without their winter tires.

  3. Wow! It looks like winter to me too ❄️
6 months is a lot but I must admit it looks beautiful now ❄️
I’m glad Jasper enjoys his first snow β„οΈπŸ˜‰

  4. I liked your snow pics…we only got two inches of snow, but most of it melted…it looked beautiful outside with all the trees decorated with snow ! β˜•οΈβ˜•οΈπŸ˜»πŸ€”πŸ™‚β„οΈπŸ©πŸ©

  5. Steve, your area is giving the Far North some competition. It snowed about 10 days ago and we now have about 6 plus inches. Here we occasionally get 9 months of winter but 8 months is more like it. Never get too excited when the snow stays until the end of April or into May. Enjoy snow but a shorter season is appreciated. The first snow was a little late. Beautiful but long. Enjoy the winter, summer is coming!

    • At one time I did enjoy winter a bit, though it’s always too long, 3 or 4 months wouldn’t be so bad, 2 months would be perfect. I can’t really get out and enjoy winter activities anymore so warm weather is more on my list. Getting 5 miles out of town and snow this early is quite normal, but here close to the lake we are usually about 3 weeks later. This year was different. Oh well.
