Daily Pics #318.

Good morning to everyone! It’s a mild morning but still cloudy and we did get more freezing rain overnight so there is a lot of ice out there again. I was ready for it this time however so no slipping and sliding when I put out the bird feeders. Not bad. I need to pick up some sand again to spread on all this ice we keep getting. Looks like it will be one of those winters with lots of ice problems. We did get another 2 inches (5cm) of snow yesterday, so not much to get concerned about. My Daily Pics will be getting a new name starting December 1st. That’s about the only change to this but will better reflect this daily post. The pictures will still be a part of the post however. I will be making a few changes over the next little while, up to January 1st. That will mean adding a couple new posts, both will be a weekly post rather than daily. I’m not saying any more just now, but I will let you know more before they actually begin. I have been thinking of these things since early September, but I have been a bit slow getting all my pictures from this year sorted out properly so I can find the pics I want.

Speaking of Jasper. Poor little guy. He came to get some peanuts yesterday afternoon and of course the blue jays came as well. Jasper took one and off he went with it, then came back and spotted a blue jay in the tree holding a peanut. Jasper turned red and ran after that blue jay. The jay just flew to another branch. Jasper still came after him until finally the blue jay flew off. Then Jasper spotted another one down lower on the tree and went after it. Same thing happened and the jay flew off leaving Jasper sitting there chattering away. He was obviously upset. But he came over and got a peanut which seemed to settle him down. He will never learn it seems.

Red-breasted nuthatch.

The featured image at the top is a red-breasted nuthatch and being so pale underneath it is likely a female, though it doesn’t always work that way. In the pic above we have one that is darker underneath so likely it is a male. Thank you all for your many wonderful comments of encouragement yesterday. Hopefully everything is now taken care of, but I will let you know if anything else happens. I hope you all have a wonderful day and God bless!

    • Hi Simon! Yes, nuthatch is an odd name for these little birds and I have no idea why they got that name. They are small birds, like a chickadee, very friendly. Naturally, their food is bugs, even in winter they look for bugs hiding under the tree bark for the winter. They have long thin beaks perfect for prying into the bark after the insects. They will eat seeds too in winter, plus I put out suet for them and the woodpeckers. I am thinking of starting a little series of posts talking about some of our winter birds, and a few summer birds too, so people will know a little more about them.πŸ˜€πŸ¦πŸ¦‰πŸ¦†πŸ§ That will start in December. Have a great evening Simon!πŸ˜πŸ˜ΊπŸŒ™

      • That’s a big information, yes I read all and I had a wild imagination while reading this. Thinking from a bird point of view, they would be communicating like this, hey buddies, we are going to travel to east, we will have plenty of activity to do, eat seed, eat insects and play hide and seek and most importantly we have a big animal that comes with seeds, it’s white and what’s covered in thick fur, mostly Blue, it can change its skin, most importantly its very friendly, it gives us lot of treats, I hear other species call this one Steve πŸ˜‹πŸ˜ Love to talk to birds like that 😍 if only I’m dr. dolittle πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ . Have a lovely Thursday Morning πŸ€—πŸ€—

    • Well, it does give Jasper some good exercise chasing those blue jays. He has to keep in shape for when the chipmunks return in the spring!
Yes, I’m watching the ice carefully now, thanks Ribana, have a nice evening!πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜Έβ˜•β˜•
