Morning Coffee At Steve’s Country #2.

Good morning! I hope all of you are feeling well and ready to enjoy another day! Time to grab a cup of coffee and relax for a few minutes while we take a short look around us this morning. It is heavy clouds once more, but milder feeling, though quite frosty out there. That frost always adds a bit of slipperiness to the deck, but I was expecting it this time so didn’t do my usual sliding routine. That was nice. As I was tossing out the peanuts for the blue jays I heard the familiar chirping of the evening grosbeaks. Good, I thought, and I took out some sunflower seeds. That grosbeak’s chirping became much louder and more excited as I spread the seeds on the feeder. Soon she was down, feasting away. Just one.

Hmm, that’s odd. She had her fill and was off again. No others have come. Very strange this year feeding birds. The feeders should be at their busiest in the morning. There really is no busy time this winter, very few birds are showing up. Yesterday afternoon Jasper, my squirrel buddy, showed up and since it wasn’t too cold I sat out there and talked to him for a bit. He sat there eating his peanut. “How’s it going looking for a mate?” Loud chip. “Oh, sorry, bad subject.” Chip? “I don’t have a mate so why do you need one? Well it’s different for me, you should have a mate, then you get baby squirrels and one of them will grow up and chase you away from your territory.” Loud chip.

“That’s the way it works with squirrels.” Chip. “Oh, now you’ve decided to stay single?” Chip. “Hmm, you don’t want to lose all this good food? Smart. But you should move closer, you have a long ways to carry your peanuts back home.” Chip. “Oh, no place to live over here.” Chip. “The rocks along the hill here are no good?” Chip. “Oh, can’t dig deep enough due to solid rock.” Chip. “Yes, the neighbor tore down his shed, that was a nice place to live.” He looks at me. “Here’s another peanut.” And off he runs back home. Today we have two hairy woodpecker pics to share, a female and male, with red spots on his head. I hope you enjoyed your cup of coffee, have a wonderful day and God bless!

  1. Good morning Steve. I appreciate the hospitality along with the conversation with Jasper. Now I know how to tell the male woodpecker from the female. Central Ohio finally received snow on Monday night, about 2-3 inches where I live. The Great Lakes snow machine went crazy up north, tripling the amount of snow up there.

    • Good morning Richard, nice to see you this morning! We only have about 7 inches of snow right now, the southern part of Ontario got 10 inches, the same time you got yours. They always get more snow than us due to the Great Lakes, but it will disappear for them in a few days,🙄 whereas ours stays for months.😬 Have a great day and another cup of coffee!😀😺☕☕

  2. we are heading to “fire watch warnings” today which means it is supposed to be windy. temps to be in the high 70s to low 80s. sigh but the skies have been clear and at night, the full beaver moon has been very bright. i’m sure the cooler weather is coming for us. just dont know when.
