Good morning everyone! The coffee pot is on with that wonderful smell of coffee filling the air throughout my apartment. Just help yourself to a cup, grab a chair, sit back and relax for a little while. It is a cloudy morning once again with a temp of 19F (-7C) and a light mist which has coated everything with a light frosty layer of ice. However, I was careful this morning as I went outside with fresh food for the birds and Jasper. I only saw 4 blue jays this morning which is not good. There is 4 redpolls too, 6 chickadees and a male downy woodpecker.
I think there might be a flying squirrel around at night, though I haven’t seen it yet. But the leftover seeds are eaten by morning which is usually a good indication of a nightly visitor. Flying squirrels are common in this area so it wouldn’t be surprising to find one out there. They are a nocturnal animal, which means they are only active at night. They are the same size as the red squirrel (like Jasper). They are easy to tame and I have had them sitting on my hand, arm and shoulder at other times. And their fur is extremely thick and soft. It needs to be in order to keep these little animals warm through our bitterly cold winter nights.
Though so far, our nights haven’t been too cold this winter. We get nice winters like this now and then, kind of a nice change from our normal winters. But things can change fast too. There are 3 blue jays sitting on the same branch right now, and one has just come down to the feeder to fill up with some sunflower seeds. Jasper still hasn’t shown up, he must be sleeping late today. He was here quite a bit yesterday and managed to get a lot of peanuts for himself. The blue jays were not here at the time. It is quiet outside right now, not a bird in sight, perhaps that shrike (or hawk) is back again. I certainly hope not. The chickadees are back again, whatever the danger, it has passed. We have some nice bright hollyhocks to enjoy again today, a wonderful reminder of summer. It looks like our coffee pot is empty once again so time to say goodbye until tomorrow. Have a wonderful day and God bless!
