For a smile as wide as a country sunrise

Hi once again everyone! I know we have looked at a lot of different sparrows, and there are more yet, but I will end with this one for now. This is the “White-crowned Sparrow”, one of our four big sparrows, along with the Harris’, Fox, and White-throated sparrows. This is usually the last of the big sparrows to come back in the spring, but they do not stay here, they head much further north for their nesting. They like the tundra habitat or scrub trees along the edge of the tundra, right across Canada and into Alaska. They will also nest right in the tree line of the far north as well. Both sexes are the same color, the young have brown and buff colored stripes on the head. They usually arrive here in mid to late April and don’t stay around very long. In fall they come through in September/early October. Have a wonderful day everyone and God bless!

They spend their winters in the southern US and summers north of us. So you could see them on spring and fall migration.

Thanks Sharon! Yes, these sparrows stand out in a crowd! They likely go through your area during migration, but they’re easy to miss since they don’t stay around long.ππΊππ·

Cute little bird and I love the stripes on his head. I’ll have to look more closely at the one’s that hang out in the tree off our balcony. Now that we are having spring like weather, there may be more of a variety to see. π§ π¦ π€ π£ π₯ π¦ π¦ π¦ π¦βοΈβοΈ

These sparrows spend the winter down in your area, at least the northern half of the state. This year they may have gone even further south.ππΊππ·
