Tuesday’s Tails #2.

Good morning everyone! It’s a beautiful, sunny morning once again, and a bit milder as well. And today the sun is supposed to stick around all day for us. That will be nice. I tried yesterday to get a picture of a white-crowned sparrow in the sunshine, without success. When the sun was shining something always happened to scare the birds away. Sigh. I did get some pictures while it was cloudy, but sunshine really brings out the colors so nicely, especially the sparrow’s beautiful back and wing markings. So hopefully it will happen today. They won’t be around long before they head further north for their breeding. As I mentioned before, there are now 9 squirrels, at least, though I’m thinking there might be more.

A black-capped chickadee in a bush right beside me.

Some are getting quite friendly with me, but not with the chipmunks. However, the females don’t seem to mind the chipmunks at all and both will eat quite close together. I have noticed this with all the females, quite interesting. Jasper and Chase also don’t waste time chasing the chipmunks. But some, like Freddie and Leap, absolutely hate having those chipmunks around and will begin the chase while they are still 15 feet apart. Freddie went after Skamper the other day so Skamper quickly make a sharp turn behind one of the boxes. Poor Freddie didn’t make the turn and over the edge he went! He came right back but didn’t notice Skamper in the peanut box filling up and he came over to the box too. Just then Skamper came out the door. Poor Freddie. He jumped right up onto the box, ran in circles and then took off the opposite direction!

Baxter the blue jay.

One day Jasper grabbed a peanut and was about to go over the edge of the deck and Skamper came up right at that moment. Jasper jumped straight up and Skamper went under him and over to the peanut box. Jasper landed and looked all around but didn’t see Skamper, but anyway he decided to take the stairs instead and kept looking behind him as he went. Leap, another male squirrel, was quietly eating sunflower seeds in one spot where squirrels are allowed. But chipmunks also like sunflower seeds and that spot is a favorite for Skamper. So Skamper came up right behind Leap, poor squirrel, he jumped so high and fell behind the box and he was running back and forth behind boxes and finally found his way out and just ran off to the trees! Then a female squirrel, as yet unnamed, whose coat is exactly the same as Jasper, even the tail is the same, so from the back it’s impossible to tell them apart.

This one is Jasper, I think.

Anyway, she’s sitting on the step outside my door eating a peanut and Skamper comes up beside her. Wow, talk about going wild! She flipped over backward, jumped high, ran in circles, tripped and rolled and ran off down the stairs so fast! Skamper just sat still, I’m sure he was wondering what was going on. But once it was quiet again he filled up with his peanuts and went over the edge of the deck…just as Freddie came up. Freddie stood there looking around then spotted Skamper on the ground and the chase was on! Skamper ran past Chase again and he got into a fight with Freddie and the chase was on! Off through the trees went those two squirrels! And Skamper went home. I hope you all have a wonderful day and God bless!
