Steve and Muffin’s Wildflowers #25.
Hello everyone and welcome back to our wildflower series this week! Today’s wildflower is the “yellow goat’s-beard”. This is one of our non-native wildflowers that originally came from Europe. Today it is quite common across Canada and the US, but it generally doesn’t take over a landscape like some introduced wildflowers can do, at least not in this area. They can be found in fields, meadows and roadsides and will sometimes enter lawns and gardens as well. The flowers are up to 2 inches (5cm) across that open in the morning and usually close up around noon or early afternoon. Their seed heads are like giant dandelion seed heads about 3 inches (7.5cm) across and actually look quite beautiful. They will bloom from May to September, though here it’s usually just in late May and June. The plants can grow up to 3 feet (90cm) tall. The flower heads like to always aim towards the sun.

It does? Looks more like a sunflower. But those seed heads are super fascinating!
