Tuesday’s Tails #10.

Good morning everyone! Wow, what a change in the weather! From a high of 95F a couple days ago, to a forecast high of 65F (18C) today. Right now it’s 52F (11C), cloudy and a north wind. It actually feels cold out there, so I put a jacket on to spend a bit of time on the deck. My coffee certainly cooled off fast. Not much activity, Pocket was the only chipmunk this morning. Jasmine was the first squirrel, Freddie came next, then Slim. Freddie ran from Slim right away, I thought for sure he would stand his ground, being bigger than Slim. Hmm, maybe Chase will do it then. I hope so anyway. I would rather have Chase as top squirrel than Slim. Chase is more friendly. Oh well, we’ll see what happens.

Is it safe to come for peanuts?

Just after I posted yesterday morning, Jasmine and Slim showed up and started their “discussions” once again. Slim came charging across the deck and Jasmine took off running. They went around the deck, behind the boxes, through the boxes, around the flower pots, through the boxes again and then off the deck flew Jasmine into the raspberry patch, followed closely by Slim. All was quiet for a while, then Slim returned and started eating peanuts. I was about to go out and chase him away but Jasmine returned and came walking slowly toward Slim who was chattering at her. Then up on the step she jumped beside Slim and Slim leapt at Jasmine who jumped straight up and landed on top of Slim.

They rolled around chattering and even bouncing on the deck! Then Slim broke free and took off running with Jasmine right behind him. Off the deck they went and disappeared in the trees. All was quiet for a time. The chipmunks were happily carrying away peanuts. Then Jasmine returned. “Good work Jasmine, here’s a nice big peanut.” Chip. “You’re welcome.” Chip. “I agree, Slim is getting to be a problem. You need to enlist the help of other squirrels, like Jasper.” Loud chip. “Well, yes, he does tend to hide a lot these days. But that’s because he’s scared of you.” Chippeeeeee. “Um, that’s not nice to laugh at Jasper. But he could be a big help just the same.” Chip. “Well, no, I wasn’t thinking of using him as bait. But if both of you attacked Slim at the same time, he would get scared and run away for good.”

Coffee has decided the safest place to open peanuts is hiding in the long grass.

Chippeeeeee. “Um, you’re laughing at Jasper again. Yes, Slim would be afraid of Jasper too if you worked together.” Chip. “Good, think about it, then chip with Jasper. Have another big peanut.” Chip. “You’re welcome.” And off she goes. This morning Jasmine was here enjoying a quiet breakfast. But Slim showed up again. He seems to know when she will be here. He wants to fight. But he was soon on the run with Jasmine close behind him. Another day, another chase. I think all the chipmunks, except Pocket, are staying home in bed where it’s warmer. But Pocket came, or tried to anyway, he wasn’t doing too well so I think he finally gave up. Oh well. Have a terrific Tuesday everyone and God bless!
