Saturday’s Solitude #11.

Good morning everyone! It is a beautiful morning to sit on the deck with my coffee. Sir George, Lady Pearl and Sir Henry were all here for their breakfast, though not at the same time. Sir George and Sir Henry don’t really get along and Sir George is bigger by quite a bit so he’s the boss around here. So Sir Henry comes a little later for his breakfast, but he was earlier than normal this morning. He’s usually the last gull in the evening too. Speaking of time, the days are getting shorter now, and it’s noticeable, especially in the morning. So sad to see that, but there is still much of summer left to enjoy anyway.

Solitude’s beauty at the river.

Still, summer often ends around mid August, so we have to enjoy what we have while it’s still here. Hopefully we will have a longer summer this year. The chipmunks have been very busy this morning. Little Choco has made several trips, carrying one peanut each time. I have tried to get a picture, but he moves so fast that so far I have not succeeded. He comes out, grabs one peanut and he’s gone again. He hasn’t yet been able to stuff any in his cheeks like the others do, so it’s just one at a time. But he doesn’t seem to mind, he looks very happy with his one peanut as he scampers away.

Solitude’s beauty at the lake.

Slim was the only squirrel to show up this morning. He did kind of chase Skamper once, but he didn’t put much effort into it. I have been trying to teach him not to chase the chipmunks. If he’s nice with them, then he gets bigger peanuts. Now if I’m outside he will leave them alone completely. But he looked bored this morning. He just lay down on the deck railing watching the chipmunks come and get peanuts. I think he wanted another squirrel to show up so he could chase them. He’s finding out it’s not so much fun being top squirrel. No one wants to challenge him anymore. So they stay away.

It’s a beautiful sunny summer morning. Most birds have stopped singing now, they all have young in the nest, or young flying around. So the singing stops. Some birds continue singing all summer, though not as much, but most birds stop once the young are out of the nest. It’s quiet. There’s barely a breeze. The leaves move just slightly now and then. There is smoke in the air once more.

Devastation of a forest fire, but the beauty comes back quickly, except the trees, they take about 80 years to return.

There are 79 forest fires burning now, the largest is 126,024 acres, it has gained about 50,000 acres in the last 2 days. There is another at 114,450 acres. But none of the fires pose an immediate risk to people or property so far. But it’s always necessary to be watchful during fire season. And hopefully people will be careful so that they are not the reason a fire starts. Slim left, the chipmunks need more peanuts and I need more coffee. I hope you all have a most wonderful weekend and God bless!
