Steve And Muffin’s Wildflowers #61.

Hi everyone! Today’s wildflower is the “Creeping Phlox”, also called “moss phlox” and “moss pink”. This is a native wildflower, originally from the eastern US but spreading it’s range a bit. It will grow in sunny and partly shady locations, in sandy or rocky soil, in forests or forest edges, rocky ledges, fields and in gardens. Each flower is about 3/4 inch (18mm) across and each plant will produce several flowers. Plants are generally about 6 inches (15cm) tall. Blooming season is said to be May, but here it’s from the last half of May to the first half of June. There are a number of these flowers along the beginning of the path to the river, and they seem to be spreading very slightly each year. They definitely are a nice part of the flowering landscape. They can be found from this area to the east coast here in Canada, and in the US from Minnesota to Louisiana and across to the east coast, except S. Carolina and Florida.
